Hi - my 20 week old was sleeping through (from 7.00 pm until 5.30 am). He would then have a feed and back to sleep until around 7.15 am. He has never had a dreamfeed and was pushing his last night feed later and later. However 3 weeks ago he had a stinking cold and was only having around 15 oz of milk in the day and then waking once or twice for food. He got over his cold and since then he has been waking again once or twice a night and he is literally gasping for his bottle. I only let him have 4 oz of milk in the night ...

He has slept through 3 nights out of 7 this week but Friday and Sunday night he woke twice.

I have upped his feeds to 7 oz per bottle and changed his teats to fast flow today. Should i think about putting him on hungry baby milk at night or start to wean. It is definitely a hunger issue and he doesn't ever wake in the night to play or anything else. His waking is also erratic so i am convinced it is hunger.

Any advice would be appreciated.

(I've already told you..............!!)

It probably is hunger. Ds was the same at the same age - started waking in the night after sleeping through. I started to wean him at 5 months. He didn't sleep through again till 7 months.

If I was in the situation again, I'd probably not wean and just give him more milk. Personally I wouldn't go for hungry baby milk as I don't think it has any more calories, and calories are probably what he needs.

hungry baby milk is casein based..takes longer to digest so keeps baby feeling fuller longer...so might make a couple of hours difference at night....!

agree he needs more calories...but should try and hold off weaning for a little while longer...especially if history of food allergy & intolerances i believe

26 weeks is recommended weaning age....

I'm going to be controversial, if he was mine I'd give him some baby rice at his 5pm feed (if he has one around then). Sounds like hunger to me.

Hi there,

My DD started on the babyrice, just once a day at 20 weeks. But she as also on the hungrier baby milk. Making up for lost time as she was in Special Care 4 days after birth for not feeding.

I would suggest trying hungrier baby milk first, perhaps for the last 1 or 2 feeds of the day to see if you can get him to go back through the night soundly.

Also I might add she is 3 now and is not overweight - nor has she ever been - had to say that as I read an article which attributes childhood obesity to early weaning and formula - which make me boil!

Is he finishing his 7oz bottles? Can you try him with 8?

lulumama · 23/10/2006 16:44

.

taylormama · 23/10/2006 16:50

thank you all. He is only having 6 - 6.5 oz out of each bottle. He never finishes a bottle in one go it takes around 30 - 50 mins as he has a break ... i will try the hungry baby milk first but if anyone has anymore suggestions on encouraging him to drink more in the day i would appreciate it.

Does he show other signs of being ready to start taking cereal. Does he take more than 32 oz a day? My ds started waking up more, and seemed very interested in food we ate and would get upset if we ate in front of him. I started giving him cereal at 4 months and he took it without a problem. As soon as he started cereal he slept through again. I know doctors say 6 months, but each babies needs are different. Look for other signs that he may be ready for cereal before you introduce it.

taylormama · 23/10/2006 17:41

he doesn't have more than 32 oz. I am going to try these faster teats and see if that makes a difference as well as the hungry baby milk and then the food. Don't want to wean early if i don't need to.
