What bottle finally worked for your bottle-refuser?

flipflopsonfifthavenue · 15/02/2015 16:52

DS2 is 14wks and ebf. Like DS1 before him he's so far refused a bottle of expressed bm. Actually, he took 60ml from DP once but I think it was by accident and he's never repeated the mistake Wink

If you had a bottle refuser what kind of bottle worked for you in the end? Or was it less a question of the type of bottle and more just keeping on trying etc

I'd like to be able to introduce the odd bottle a coupe of times a week so I can start going for the odd swim/run in the eves and not leave DP with no way to feed DS2 if he wakes

Dr Browns worked for us in the end but I'm not sure if it was anything to do with the bottle or just that I finally wore her down Wink

DD accepted a NUK bottle after a battle of wills. DS refused every kind of bottle and in the end never had one at all. He accepted a sippy cup at 8 months though.

Artandco · 15/02/2015 16:59

Nuk glass bottle with latex teat. We also used a doidy cup fairly early

squizita · 15/02/2015 18:31

Lansinoh bottle and hot milk. Smile Mothercare does lansinoh.

tilder · 15/02/2015 18:44

Persistence here. Tried all sorts!

Also, might be worth trying different teat speeds (if that's the right term?) And heating it. Dd would only drink milk if it was warm. A real pita, but at least she took it.

Good luck.

After weeks of trying to get my 7 week old ebf DS to take a bottle of expressed milk I tried five different brands and he will only take MAM bottles! No idea why but he refuses any others but doesn't hesitate with these!

amy83firsttimer · 15/02/2015 19:01

Asda cheapies! 3 for £2.75!

WishUponAStar88 · 15/02/2015 19:01

My 4.5 month has refused all bottles so far but has started to take bits from a sippy but the last week or so.

toddlerwrangling · 15/02/2015 19:02

Nothing! Never got DD to accept any bottle, the dastardly thing Grin

RosyfingeredDawn · 15/02/2015 19:04

2 days before starting nursery, wolfed down a bottle with a Nuk teat.

angelcake20 · 15/02/2015 23:11

DS would not drink from anything other than me and we had every single teat and cup on the market (10 years ago admittedly). I went back to work at 6 months and dropped daytime feeds and he survived for 8 months on two feeds and two yogurts a day, in addition to solids. Didn't seem to do him any harm. He finally started sipping water from a cup about 14 months. Fortunately he had a very predictable routine and slept through very early so I could just put him to bed and go out.

Tommee tippee. And a lot of perseverance. DH did all the persevering and I stayed out of the house or room completely.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 16/02/2015 00:17

I found it needed to be quite warm before it was acceptable but only that DD was quite under the weather made her crack I think. Tommy Tippee was fine. Watch the flows if he's a fast bfer you might want to go straight to grade 2.

Tried every brand of cup/teat/bottle going with her older sister and she went on total strike.

Cliffdiver · 16/02/2015 01:52

DD1: Tommee Tippee with a variflow teat (the one with the cross)

DD2: Phillips Avent with fast flow (number 4) teat.

But both DDs would only accept the bottle when they were 8+ months and solids were established. DD2 will still often refuse the bottle and DD1 only took it consistently when she weaned off the breast at 16mo.

moggle · 16/02/2015 09:00

Two bottle refusers in my acquaintance have taken ebm from Munchkin Latch bottles. I've seen them in Boots.
My DD happily took bottles from 3 weeks, then at about 8 wks we had a gap of about 2 weeks where she didn't have any, then she refused them and screamed the house down over it. We got her back on track with the same bottles (medela) using distraction (TV) and the main thing was swapping the bottle for her dummy. Kept her calm and eventually she started sucking. Now DH gives her a bottle a few times a week so she doesn't lose the knack again

MarrogfromMars · 16/02/2015 09:03

Nuk for DS1. Gave up the battle with DS2.

PuppyMummy · 16/02/2015 11:09

Nuk latex teat with a glass bottle as well for mine!

But not until he went to nursery at 7 months! took him 3 days to decide he would have it!

Artandco · 16/02/2015 12:23

Oh and not for now but if any future babies I think it's fine to introduce a bottle straight away. Not loads, but enough to get them used to it. There's no need to wait for breastfeeding to settle before introducing as long as it's not full replacement feeds.

Ie I would in future give 60ml (2oz) of milk once a day from a few days old. Just enough they get used to bottle but not enough that breastfeeding is affected.

squizita · 16/02/2015 13:28

Art 2 oz is almost a full fees for many babies! Grin I agree but to start with used 1oz then moved on to 2 1/2 oz which is quite enough as a whole "meal".
But then again mine feeds 9-10 times a day!

Artandco · 16/02/2015 14:27

Yep I meant just one 2oz feed. I've mine would breastfeed say x10 a day, so I would still feed 9 times but offer a small bottle once ontop. They don't have to drink all 2oz, but I think it would help

Artandco · 16/02/2015 14:29

Btw, I know the small ready made formula cartons are 200ml, does anyone know if they sell them any smaller?

HSMMaCM · 16/02/2015 14:38

DD went straight for a cup, after I bought every kind of bottle and teat on the market.

Stubbed · 16/02/2015 14:46

Nothing worked. Sippy cup from 5 months or so. Tried everything, with my dd I didn't bother I couldn't face it again

amy83firsttimer · 16/02/2015 15:44

I think the bottles the hospital gave us were 75ml but you had to pour into another bottle.
