DS Not drinking his milk

Bit worried about my DS. He is 7 1/2 months and has been having 3 bottles a day since he was 6 months. All of a sudden he started leaving a few ounces and now takes hardly any of his bedtime bottle at all. Last night just 2 oz.

He eats very well, and drinks water from a beaker (even tried pouring his milk into a beaker to see if he'd drink some more, and he did drink a bit of it) but I am worred that he's not getting enough milk. Also worried that he might start waking in the night because he's thirsty/hungry.

Any comments/suggestions greatly received.

Have you changed the teat on his bottle? He should be on the fast flow (number 4) at his age. If he's still on a slower flow teat, that might be why he's not taking it. My dd used to just give up, then I'd go up a teat and it was all back to normal.

This handy tip from my helpful HV - not many about, so thought I'd mention it!

Thanks lalaa,
I'm using Dr Brown's bottles so they're slightly different from Advent, and yes he is on the 6 - 9 month teat.

Anyone else any ideas?

Hi BR, my ds (just 10mo) takes milk 3x a day from a spouted cup, which is just over 1/2 pint in total. So he gets milk with his weetabix and a fromage frais and cheese in the day. As I bf and went straight to the cup I'm not sure if this amount is what he was getting (from me) before but he seems content with the amount. Sometimes he only takes a few sips from the bedtime cup, it really depends on how tired he is. I don't force it on him and just make a mental note to maybe give him a ffrais at lunch aswell as at dinner (or whatever).

Sorry, this probably isn't helping! My HV said he should be getting around 1pt a day until 1yr and this can be in any form (drink, cooking, cheese etc). And he can get calcium & iron from other foods too not just milk. It may be cos the weather is getting warmer and he's gone off a warm drink? Have you tried it cold/room temp? Maybe this is a time to move towards a 'special' milk cup if he seems keen? The TommyTippee ones have quite a fast flow. HTH. I'm sure you'll get some better advice shortly!

Hi bunnyrabbit, looks like HV advice for 1pt a day is misleading. Read some more on this recent thread

Hi Karen99,
Thanks for your messages. I have tried DS on milk in a cup and he will take some, but I think he's still surprised when I try him with it as he's expecting water.

Very comforting to know your DS takes such a small amount at bedtime. As DS eats a whole wheetabix with milk for brekkies, and likes cheese sauces and yoghurt/petit filous etc, I think I will just go with the flow for the moment. Oh, incidentally, it is the flip top Tommy Tippee cups that I use, and he does indeed seem to like the fast flow....

.. actually I wonder if he prefers the cup to the bottle, maybe he's finding the teat to hard now..... but then he drinks his morning bottle OK... Oh I give up!!

know exactly how you feel. I have a completely different looking cup for my ds' milk (has Winnie the Pooh on it whereas his water cup is plain (Avent Magic)). My ds also gave a surprised look when he was expecting water so he now has his milk in his Pooh cup and after a few days associated it with milk. The TT cups do come with different pics on them if you search so maybe you can find the same spout but diff cup, eg. I've noticed the ones in Boots are diff to those in Sains. HTH.

Forgot to say there's no harm in 'pushing' the cup for a couple of days as you will want to get him off bottles eventually and this may be the perfect opportunity... let us know how things go.
