combining breast & bottle

i'm giving my 11 week old dd 1 or 2 bottles of formula during the day and the remainder of feeds are breast.

she is taking 150 ml of formula - is this equivalent to 150 ml of breast milk.

the reason i'm asking is that when i express my milk seems to stop after about 5 mins on each breast and i'm only getting about 50 ml total. my dd only feeds for about 5/10 mins so i'm not sure she's getting enough (although she is gaining weight rapidly) and whether my milk is drying up.

does expressing give the same amount of milk as when baby is latched on or can baby's extract more - IYSWIM??

Hi babies this age are v efficient at getting the milk out so am sure she is taking out more. If she is gaining weight and seems happy then I wouldn't worry

Baby will get far more milk from you than a machine, have you got a manual or an electric pump?, only reason I ask is I got about 20ml from a manual one but the proper electic ones you can hire from NCT/local hopspital actually increased my milkflow!

I did use a manual but found it really difficult to get milk out. Now using a Medela mini electric pump which gets the milk flowing out really quickly for 5 minutes or so, I then have to stop and try again after an hour or so.

Babies can definitely get more milk than any pump. I usually did fine with pumps but I have friends who could barely ever get anything at all with a pump but managed to feed their babies just fine! would agree that the type of pump can make a difference but oddly enough I found an Avent manual very good!
