Things you love about breast feeding

Just to celebrate and help keep us motivated through the long, sleepless nights - what do you love about feeding your baby?

I love the face she makes when she pops off my boob - she stretches her neck out, raises her eyebrows (she doesn't actually have eyebrows but I don't know what to call that bit that should!) and falls straight to sleep - often with my nipple in her ear!

When she's basically fallen asleep and I try to remove her and she does frantic sucking it reminds me of when you turn off the tv and someone wakes up and says 'I was watching that!'

How about you?

MsSampson I came on to say the same thing! Can't wait to get back to scoffing my face when the next one comes Grin

oh this post has really made me miss BFing. I used to love the little noises she made. The baby version of 'nom nom nom'! And if I tried to cover up with a muslin when we were out and about, a little hand or foot would always find a way to wiggle out from under it. However, I don't miss the amount of times I managed to flash a boob at an unsuspecting delivery man when I'd forgotten to cover up after switching to the other side!

I must be doing it wrong.

Aawww. Thank you for adding to this everyone. Three weeks in and I'm struggling with sore nipples and mastitis. This has given me the will to keep going! Smile

Ah this is so lovely to read, especially as I often find ebf so hard in terms of my DDs dependency on me and my resulting loss of independence. Reading these, many of which I can relate to, makes it all worthwhile!

My DD doesn't do this so much anymore but when she was really little and she'd had enough she would push my boob away with a flourish, tilt her head back with pursed lips and pull such a diva face as if to say "I'm done now, you may take this away!" Used to make me chuckle! Now she does the stopping mid feed top look up and smile at me before carrying on, and she holds my hand while feeding.

Definitely for me it's been worth persevering through the tough times for these moments.

Although I'm in the process of tried to wean DS off, I love how he strokes my tummy when we lie down in bed to feed. And I absolutely adore the post-feed stretch with fists in the air, brow raised and lips pouting in the first few months of feeding. It makes me want another just for that alone!

Cliffdiver · 06/02/2015 15:58

DD2 10 months has been unfortunate enough to have Scarlett Fever and a vital infection in the last couple of months, it was such a blessing to know that even though she was refusing water / solids she would always have a breastfeed so I knew she was getting some much needed nourishment.

I love the excited/expectant little grunty noises she makes when I sit her on my lap and start pulling my top up.

I love being able to just sit and run my fingers through her hair and stroke her cheeks when she is feeding.

I love that breastfeeding is an excuse to be lazy 'DH would you mind doing the washing, DD2 needs feeding'.

My 10mo points at everything she likes/wants/finds interesting. While I'm feeding her, she points at me. I am very flattered Smile

nyldn · 06/02/2015 19:16

DS (almost 6 mo) used to do this hysterical thing where he wouldn't start for a few minutes but would have a very serious look and gesticulating in a way that DH and i decided it looked as though he was explaining the mechanics of bf to me before getting to business. he, sadly, stopped doing that, but now he insists on holding my hand the whole time. if I try to look at my phone he honestly tries to kick it away and if I try to have a conversation with DH, he looks at DH like, "excuse me, this is MY time...."

RigglinJigglin · 06/02/2015 19:27

One of DDs first words was 'boobies' - she would say 'mmmm nice' and pat them too Grin

Cliffdiver · 06/02/2015 19:42

Haha. DD2 also says 'bbbbbbboooooobbbbbbb' when she wants feeding. I had the audacity last week to put her in her buggy when she wanted milk and she was saying it all round town Grin.

DS is 10 months and when I'm feeding him he will use his outer arm to reach up and stroke my eyebrows and stroke my nose and he does it so lovingly. Sometimes he will play with my hair too.

In those moments of feeding it all just feels so blissful. No matter how hard a day I've had and how stressed I am as soon as the bedtime feed starts I feel like everything else just slips away. I feel so calm and relaxed and when I look down at DS I think I could burst with love.

Whenever I go to feed him I say the work milk and start unbuttoning my top and as soon as he clicks as to what is about to happen he goes frantic and starts trying to crawl up my legs as fast as he can.

I also love the moments when he stops sucking and just stares at me for a few seconds and then starts sucking again. I definitely love it too when he unlatches in order to give be a massive grin and then latches back on, it's so sweet.

But the face stroking he does whilst feeding is by far my favourite aspect.

Grin Love this thread! I have an 8 month old.

My favourite moments:

  • When he looks up at me and starts grinning and as a result the nipper pops out of his mouth even though he's half trying to keep hold of it
-When I'm lying in bed with him climbing all over me in the morning and he's already had his main feed but keeps going back for a bit more: one second he's sitting there trying to grab my phone off the bedside table the next he's got his mouth wide open lunging forward clumsily onto my boob and often missing by a couple of inches!
  • When he crawls up to me and starts nuzzling his head into my chest
  • If he falls and hurts himself just shoving a boob in his mouth instantly drains all the angry redness from his face and soothes him completely. Cuddling alone doesn't have that effect, makes me wonder how formula feeding mums comfort their babies?
-When he falls asleep with a boob in his mouth at naptimes before I put him down in his cot. So peaceful and blissed out. -Not any more but when they're newborns and they go into a "milk coma" completely drunk on milk rolling eyes back and zonking out!
LauraDec · 10/02/2015 15:29

I love this! And I really needed this today.

  • I love it when DS poos and I think - I did that. I'm nourishing my baby.
  • I love that the evening cluster feeds get my out of washing up
squizita · 10/02/2015 15:35

Lol poo is not a source of affection for me! I know it's a sign of a healthy gut but ... nah still boak! Grin

ruth1104 · 10/02/2015 16:40

aaah lovely thread. I also love the 'could you just fetch me...' excuse of im busy feeding. DS does this lovely thing when he finishes feeding and he's all full and sleepy, he turns up to face me and nuzzles against my (still naked) boob as if to say 'i'll just stay here, thanks' and falls asleep. I usually take at least half an hour to fall asleep but that rush of sleepy lovey hormones from feeding has me out like a light these days! (the hourly night feeds help, ill admit!)
