DS approaching 2 but still loves formula is it ok to continue?

My DS will be 2 in 2 weeks and has sma progress formula which he loves. He has 8oz first thing and another 8oz at bedtime (in a beaker)

He is a good eater but I'm still trying to widen his diet a bit so while he's been on the formula I at least have peace of mind that he's getting all the essential nutrients.

I know cow and gate do one up to 3 yrs is it worth changing?

Why wouldn't you put him onto cows milk?

lulumama · 19/10/2006 14:02

have you tried cows milk......? my DD ( 14months) has a bottle of formula in the morning as i take the powder & water upstairs at night so don;t have to stagger down at 6.30 for her milk!

she has cows milk the rest of the time, and a varied diet..but doesn;'t eat a lot..... perhaps your DS could be ok with cows milk , if he eats well and is meeting all his developmental milestones...don't think swapping to cows milk could hurt...

I have tried cows milk during day when i've given him the odd hot chocolate or milk shake.

I know switching to cows milk would be much cheaper but I thought the formula had added vitamins etc??

Ah the power of advertising...

a child eating a varied diet, with lots of fresh fruit & veg..red meat, chicken , fish or alternative sources of protein along with milk, yoghurt cheese etc... has no need for the added vitamins in formula....! babylulu has formula in the morning as i am too lazy to go downstairs to the fridge!!

put him on cows milk and continue to vary his diet...with the money you save you can buy some different new food for him to try!!

I switched to organic cows milk the first opportunity I could (12 months), DS didn't notice and didn't mind and I certainly prefer him to have regular un-adulterated milk fresh from the cow rather than processed, sweetened milk that cost a bomb! Intending to do the same for no.2 in 6 months or so.

If you want to waste your money.....go ahead.

GhoulsToo · 19/10/2006 22:13

I'd say formula is unnecessary at 2 tbh! Full fat milk will be fine.

SANA · 20/10/2006 15:34

Hi, my DS is 19mths & drinks SMA Progress ( he doesnt like cows milk, have tried it mixed with formula, on its own, diluted, in a cup, beaker etc ect.........& he wont drink it) hes fine with it in cereal & has a varied diet, but this is one thing he is fussy about so I have let him continue drinking it as it does him no harm & its something he likes & really doesnt bother me and I have no intention of taking him off this milk until he is abit older

do what u r comfortable with, not all kids like cows milk & there is nothing worng with continuing with formula if this is only what they will drink!!!.

Mum2FunkyDude · 20/10/2006 15:38

So to conclude, there is nothing wrong with giving formula at 2 years old, if you can afford it do so.

threebob · 20/10/2006 15:56

Just thinking aloud - but we want babies and toddlers to put on weight quite quickly (compared with rest of life) and formula would have the calories to acheive that.

I would read the nutritional information and if the fat or sugar is off the scale compared with normal milk - then you might as well serve up Milo or whatever the equivalent is.
