Flying milk!! Any ideas???

Hi all.. I am breastfeeding my dd2, currently three weeks, and wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar thing whilst breastfeeding... When she feeds initially and the milk comes in, the 'let down' thing, my milk just seems to fly out!!! It catches my daughter by suprise and she almost seems to start choking coz she is trying to swallow so quickly! If she comes off the breast for a breather, the milk subsequently flys all over her... and me, and anything near by !!! Of course the milk flow does lessen during the feed, but that inital first bit takes my dd2 by suprise!! ANy ideas as to how to relieve this?? I had the same thing with dd1, but just got on with it!!

I had this... Take advantage of your over supply and express loads and stockpile in the freezer. Also, expressing before a feed will take the force away.

I had this too (resulting in a jet of milk flying across the room straight into DPs face one day! Both DD and DS seemed to get used to it after a while.

I found it quite handy to always have a muslin cloth nearby to hold over my breast if they came off and the milk was still flowing!

I had that! Memories! lol

I agree with QQSB.... stockpile, freeze and enjoy.

Of course it could become your party trick. When friends come round to coo over your DD you whip down your bra and spray them.... perhaps whilst presenting a flower or something

Lol at the spraying the room... Although my ds (4 months) can generally chomp down anything he gets these days we do still have 'spraying' moments - I try to bottle and freeze over-supply and keep it for those days when we just can't get enough... But it is v funny when it goes everywhere - over the PC keyboard once when I was on MN!!

Thanks for your responses, im glad im not the only one that has this!!! Uusually ends up spraying dd2 all over her face, happens so fast by the time i put my boob away she is all speckly !!
Is this 'spraying' effect due to having lots of milk then???

I once heard someone suggest feeding lying on yoiur back. It's not the best position for the baby, but gravity slows things down a bit for you, apparently.

Hi,

I had one side that could have sandblasted buildings and found that by having DD1 & DD2 in a more vertical, almost standing, position that it helped them cope more with the flow. It is a bit difficult though when they still need their head fully supported but it can be done with care.

I had the same and the muslin cloth was good.
Also used a sterilized breast shell on the other side and collected drip milk at every feed-freezer was full without the need to express !

I have this too - sprayed half the clinic room whilst waiting to see HV the other day...luckily no one noticed

I remember I had the same the first time round and it did eventually settle down.

I don't find expressing before a feed helps much - I can get a letdown reflex a few times during a feed and it will spray each time.

sallyrosie- ditto here with the multiple 'let downs'!! I wouldn't have thought expressing milk would have made that much difference for me either.. thanks for all your suggestions anyway, reassuring to know im not the only one ... i even got myself in the today which was amusing!!
marslady- that is a hilarious party trick, and i bet not many could perform that one
think i'll try the muslin cloth idea!!
