Best way to formula feed through the night.

We never cracked it with the first two (much older) dcs.

We used to have to go down to the kitchen and prepare and it took agggges and was a nightmare.

I need my sleep. It's the only way I'll cope.

I'm thinking of bulk buying cartons of pre made formula and sleeping with them inside my pyjamas, wedged between me and DH, in my bra, whatever works to get them to a nice warm body temp!

Then just crack open, chuck in bottle, shove in baby's mouth. No having to physically leave my bed Grin

Anybody done it this way, or have any genius ideas instead?

I had the sterilised bottles, cartons and a microwave upstairs. 40 second blast, a good shake to eliminate hot spots and that was that.

Heatherbell1978 · 19/01/2015 14:43

I prepare night bottles in advance with powder. Quick blast in the microwave when he wakes and done.

monkeyfacegrace · 19/01/2015 14:49

Okay cool. I was under the impression microwaves changed the structure of the milk so was a no-no.

Id still have to get out of bed to get bottle from fridge and microwave it though Grin

Bottle warmer on the bedside worked wonders for me, best £10 i've ever spent Grin

Heels99 · 19/01/2015 15:17

Fill sterilised bottles with boiled water and allow to cool on the side, not in fridge so the water is room temperature.. When night feeding, just add formula. No need to heat. I never heated any bottled ever.

Heels99 · 19/01/2015 15:18

Or buy the ready made bottled with the teat already in like the ones they have in hospital

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 19/01/2015 15:41

Heels. You shouldn't do it that way- the water should be at least 70 degrees when the powder goes in.

I haven't used one, but could a perfect prep machine go upstairs?

NickyEds · 19/01/2015 16:09

Heels- it is dangerous to use water less than 70 degrees to make formula as the powder isn't sterile. If you can afford it the ready made cartons, sterilised bottles and bottle warmer by the bed is probably the easiest way to feed in the night. I was lucky as ds would take the cartons at room temperature.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 19/01/2015 16:22

I used premade cartons and baby took it at room temp. Grin
Prior to that when he was on smaller amounts i warmed one up that was made up in the fridge,I was in a flat thou.
if I end up having to formula feed If we get dc2, I think I may buy a small fridge to have in our room and a kettle or a bottle warmer.
Thou the perfect prep machine does look good.
It would probably be cheaper in the long run if you were going to use pre made cartons, they are about 80p so you would spend the same amount on a perfect prep machine in 4 months of using cartons. Depending in how many feeds at night.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 19/01/2015 16:24

It's £70 on amazon prime just now so actually cheaper than I thought.

monkeyfacegrace · 19/01/2015 17:42

I can't believe the new guidelines say to make it up with hot water.

I never did that with my other two kids and they are still here to tell the tale!

I make all of my bottles up in advance with half the required amount of water, cool quickly and put in the fridge. When I need one it's quick to boil the remaining volume of water and add it, and means that the bottle is the perfect drinking temperature.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 19/01/2015 17:48

monkeyface - yes, most babies will be fine. But sadly there have been cases of serious illness (and I believe, death ), hence the change. Low statistical risk, catastrophic seriousness if it is you.Sad

Iwonderif · 19/01/2015 17:55

I used to do this: Have sterilised bottle with cooled boiled water inside. Take large flask of boiled up to bed too. When baby woke I would pour flask water into a suitable container to heat bottle then put formula in the bottle. My dd is 7 and ds 4. We did it that way with both of them.

I know things change over the years though but both were fine. Cartons are a brilliant idea too and a microwave upstairs is awesome. Gosh I wished we'd have thought of that! Why didn't we?!?! Confused

TwoLittleTerrors · 19/01/2015 17:58

Most kids didn't die without car seats either. My brother and I and all my cousins are still alive. But knowing what we know now, would you still take your child out without a car seat?

I assume you can resell that perfect prep machine. And it's not just night feeds it's for!

monkeyfacegrace · 19/01/2015 19:29

Good point well made two Grin

I'm not fussed by cost. I'd pay thousands if it meant I could sleep through the night. If we had a spare room I'd even consider a night nurse. That's how much I need my sleep!

I'm ordering a perfect prep. And a thermos flask. And a cheap microwave!

Perfect prep makes the milk the right temp to drink - so you don't need that thermos / extra microwave.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 19/01/2015 21:17

Good plan monkey, you don't need the thermos and the micro thou, it's drinking temp when it's made. An you can use it all the time, no more faffing with kettles.

ithoughtofitfirst · 20/01/2015 07:31

Take steralised bottles up to your room. Cartons. Bottle warmer. Done.

Somersetlady · 20/01/2015 07:47

Learnt from my sil. Never give formula at anything but room temperature! You can use the cartons at night then, no faffing at all just pour it into sterilised bottle and off you go.......

Ds was breast fed for 7 months and he took room temp formula without a problem so best of luck!

Redling · 20/01/2015 08:32

I found after 2 weeks DS was happy with room temp milk, so two 7oz bottles of ready made and two bottles. I have a Perfect Prep too which is probably the best purchase I've ever made. And I can sell it after.

monkeyfacegrace · 20/01/2015 16:05

Perfect prep ordered. £59 in sale at Asda Grin
It had better be worth it, I didn't even spend that much on her cot or buggy Hmm

You need a perfect prep machine. Its quite literally my favourite possession. Baby screaming for a bottle at 2am? Machine makes fresh and right temp in 2 minutes. Lifesaver!

no I don't work for tommee tippee Wink

GingerCuddleMonster · 20/01/2015 16:12

I'm in love with my perfect prep machine, it's so easy! I'll be honest I don't even know how to make formula up with a kettle Blush.
