Formula feeding when out

Please tell me what you do?!

Ds was previously on c&g so we got the small ready made bottles and took sterilised bottles out. He has now been diagnosed with cmpi so is on nutramigen which doesn't have ready made stuff.

So if we have to go out for a few hours what do I need to do/buy?

Hi Ive just started ff my 4.5 mth old. I either take a sterilised bottle and ready made Aptamil in a wee bottle or i take a ready made bottle of formula with powder. I make up with boiling water and put it in the insulated bit of my bag and it's normally the right temperature by the time he feeds. He likes it quite warm so I have the Tomme Tippee travel warmer flask with me too.

We were on comfort milk for a while. I took a bottle of cooled boiled water and a small flask of just boiled water and then a powder dispenser. Pop some of the just boiled water in bottle, pop in your powder shake and then top up to level needed with the cool boiled water. This method is in line with health advice on needing to kill bacteria in formula.

The flask I got was from asda for £3. I use ready made now, but DS has started getting fussy on warmth, so have to take tommee tippee warming flask to warm bottles, if we're doing a long day out I resort back to the 2 bottles of water method as it's lighter in my bad than lots of ready made bottles.

bad = bag!

Thanks Grin

Have just brought a powder dispenser and will get some insulated bottle bags. Luckily I have a big changing bag as we had to do a lot of changes before ds was diagnosed! So can hopefully fit everything in Smile

I was wondering this myself. I just find the whole idea of bottles stressful. But at the same time I think I'm fed up with Breast feeding.

What made you stop Breast feeding OP? (If you don't mind me asking)

Ducky23 · 16/01/2015 16:17

I didn't breastfeed at all. I know some people go nuts about that but I think it's the best thing for me Smile

It was easy to start with as I just got the ready made cartons and carried them around with a couple of sterilised bottles but now he's got cmpi I can't do that Confused

I used to make bottles up, put them straight into an insulated bag and the know that I had a two hour window to use that bottle. It was enough time to be able to get to a twins club for a couple of hours, feed and then get home for the next feed.

If going to someone's house I would measure out the powder and make it up there. IME most cafés etc will not give you hot enough water to make from scratch.

Are you sure you can't get nutramigen ready made? Mine were on nutri-prem and I had a battle to get ready made due to cost but in the end I for a sympathetic GP and a prescription for 240 single use cartons.

Ducky23 · 16/01/2015 16:31

Tbh it's just from reading threads on here I thought they didn't do the ready made stuff! I will ask my gp when I go to get the next load. Is it too late to use the baby brain excuse? Haha Smile

Ah I see! The thread caught my eye because my baby is CMPI and it's just another thing that makes bottles feel intimidating to me, what on earth would I do out of the house?! At the moment I can go anywhere for as long as I like. But weigh that up against being the only person who can feed the baby..... I'm not sure what wins.

Hey... on day two of bottle feeding (my DS is 15 days old) and really nervous about the whole thing too! Have been using the ready made bottles up to now but just bought C&G powder. I have a pacapod changing bag with an insulated pouch for bottles... but how long can you have it in there after making it up??
Also.. was thinking for night feeds to make a bottle in advance as I know it can be in the fridge for up to 12 hours... but then is it safe once brought to room temp??
Hoping you can help... breastfeeding was a total disaster but this is a new level of scary!xx

I went with the 2 bottles, flask and power pot when DD had the comfort milk (you can't buy the ready made stuff for that either). So for a 7oz bottle, Id have one bottle with 4oz of boiled water that I'd sealed and let cool. Then a flask of boiling water (that will stay hot) and an empty bottle. Put 3oz of boiling water from the flask in the empty bottle, add the 7scoops of formula from the pot (previously measured out, don't take hte whole box), shake then add the cooled water to take it up to 7oz of liquid.

bit of a faff at first, but you get used to it.

Ducky23 · 18/01/2015 17:07

Ralv have a look at the tommee tippee perfect prep for night feeds, it's been a life saver for me!

I brought some bottle bag things but not too sure if I can use them the way I think? I put boiling water in the bottles and straight into the bag and then got a power pot, would that be ok?

Hi Ducky23... Good to see you on the forums again! Was a very long time ago when we were both in early pregnancy!
I've had a look at the perfect prep machine.. It does look great but will have to save my pennies as we only just shelled out for the medela breast pump which has now been put away Smile
Yes that sounds like a good plan... So as long as the water is still hot-ish by the time I mix the powder in that will be ok?
