Newborn vomiting

I'm breastfeeding my 9 day old newborn. He's doing well and has already regained his birth weight. However, he's vomited spectacularly after feeding on a couple of occasions. It's almost like he managed to overfill himself, or I mistook tiredness cues for hunger. Dc1 wasn't a sicky baby, so I'm not sure whether I should worry about this, or whether there's anything I could do to stop it happening (I could do without the extra washing!). Grateful for any advice.

Speak to the midwives and ask if they think your baby needs to see a doctor. Obv if you think your baby is actually unwell now you will want to see a doctor direct. It all sounds like normal newborn pukiness though, as he is clearly growing well....check to make sure, though. You can call the midwives if you are not scheduled a visit.

Thanks. I don't think he's actually unwell.

Drs may say it's reflux as mine said it was "fashionable" at the moment! My DD has been given infant gaviscon but trying to get that into a BF baby is nigh on impossible!!

Yep sounds a bit like my ds. He could produce buckets of vomit without even blinking. It came out of nowhere.

He was ebf and ended up with infant gaviscon too. The sickness itself wasn't the issue but the subsequent hours of screaming was! He grew out of it completely by 7 months. He actually liked the gaviscon by the end pp! (I didn't dilute it quite as much as the directions said and syringed it in).

DD definitely had a fair few spectacular vomits in her day, she was never refluxy. Just a piglet. I would reserve judgement if I were you, it sounds totally normal.

Re washing, make sure you have millions of muslins, everywhere. I also found winding thoroughly helped, when I changed breast. Some BF babies are super windy, DD was.

Congrats on your wee one!

As alternative to baby reflux diagnosis, could you milk supply be 'fast'?

Read here on Kelly Mom about fast letdown

So dd was exactly how you describe: wasn't in pain (I didn't believe), was putting on weight beautifully and was generally happy. However, she would projectile vomit if she drank my milk quickly - and had to drink it quickly because it came out so quickly! She was just a 'sicky baby' which was messy and a pain in the arse.

I adjusted things as per that website advice which helped. The main thing I did was keep her upright for 5-10 min after a feed to let it go down and let her burb too.

We had occasions of projectile vomiting too - and literally loads would come up. Someone did say to me once, put milk in a egg cup and drop it on the side or tiled floor and it looks loads, so when the do throw up, dont be too alarmed as it probably isn't that much.

The other thing which combined the problem with dd was that she was a very 'sucky' baby. So she liked to comfort feed which I didn't have a problem with but it increased my supply, therefore she'd get a fast let down and more milk then needed - bit of a cycle. They say you can't over feed a breast fed baby - with dd you could Grin She'd just barf it up, and start again - not with any tears or upset mind. We therefore eventually got her to take a dummy and I was very strict when she had it (only straight after a feed to get her to stop feeding and when I knew she wasn't hungry or cluster feeding who was at certain times).

Speak to midwife or HV but it may not be reflux. Your baby would be screaming, be in pain and have other symptoms too.

Ps - congrats btw [happy]

Another good link about spitting up and other reasons why baby might be sick - kellymom.com/health/baby-health/reflux/

Brilliant, thanks everyone . He doesn't seem remotely bothered by it, I suspect it's just my laundry problem rather than a medical problem as the kellymom site says!
