Moving from formula to full-fat cows' milk

Hi everyone, hope you can help me with this. I progressively moved my DS now one year old onto standard (organic) full fat cows milk. He loves the taste, and it doesn't affect his digestion (well he doesn't seem to have any pain or anything like that) but his poo is very runny and almost white!! like custard color with little lumps (sorry Too Much Info). Is this normal??? Cheers, BP

My ds recently started drinking organic full fat cows milk too (in addition to bf) but his nappies are the same as before - no significant changes. Sorry if this is of no help - just wanted you to know that we hadn't experienced that. Have you spoken to the doctor? Might be worth checking...

Does it look like cake mix? This is a sign that he is not metabolising the fat properly.

threebob, could you give me a bit more detail? I've searched this on the web but couldn't find any info - yes his poo looks like cake mix, but white!! And it stinks. Our GP suggested putting him on soya milk, which changed the 'color' but he still has very runny poos and colics.

We've been refered to a specialist but we won't be able to see them before three weeks time, and DS is suffering, poor thing! Thanks for your help!

how long has it been like this?are you sure it isnt a bug?

BlueberryPancake · 18/10/2006 21:16

well, you can never be sure but he has no other symptom - no fever, no vomiting, nothing. He did have a gastro a few weeks back and recovered OK, and we started slowly introducing cow's milk and it's when we switched over completely that the poo turned white and lumpy.

Spoke to GP and nutritionist and they recommended soya formula for a couple of weeks, and we are seeing a specialist soon (still waiting for appoitment). He could have developed temporary lactose intolerence because of the bug, but that wouldn't explain the very obvious change in color and 'texture' (sorry tmi again...)

its just my ds2 had rotavirus, and he was only sick once or twice but had the runs for 2 weeks, pale yellow with lumps in,and ever since(that was about 18 months ago)he has runny/slightly lumpy poos if he drinks more than half a cup of milk.yet he was fine before then.he is 3 btw.

Sounds like a lactose intolerance if he's had a bug. Load him up with probiotics and give him soya for a bit.

divastrop · 19/10/2006 13:01

i didnt realise lactose intolerance could be triggered by a bug,i always thought it was something you were born with.it all makes sense now!

diva- the GP can test the poo for lactose intolerance cause by a bug..Dd was tested for it last year after a bad bout of gastroenteritis.....she was in the clear but puking & diaorrhea for weeks!
