Omeprazole (Giving Lozec Mupps or simular)

Please help!

Our son Jacob who is now nearly 4 months old has been suffering from reflux for the past 3(ish) months. We have tried Infant Gaviscon but with little success.

After seeing our paed recently she has prescribed Omeprezole (Lozec Mupps). Our problem is that no one seems to know how to give it to him! We know that it has to be disolved but it tastes so horrible that he wont even think of taking it. It says that it can be given with a little fruit juice but this doesnt cover the taste and we cant give it in milk as it effects the meds. I have read that you can use the casule form and remove the granules - then mix with a little mashed fruit but we are not keen to give him anything that may be inhailated (ie the granules).

I would be so grateful if there is someone out there who has used the same meds and can tell me how you got your baby to take it.

Any advice would be very much appreciated...

hi, i know what your going through, my son has suffered from reflux from birth he,s now 2 years and 10 months. was your little one prem ? anyway he,s been on all the meds there are for reflux and when he was this age we settled on domperidone ask your gp to change the meds as this comes in liquid form and tastes much nicer it also does just the same job. good luck, let me know how u get on

Hi rachluv

Domperidone sounds good - was it prescribed to you in the UK?

hi, another question sorry is he breast feeding or bottle ? if he,s bottle which milk are you using ? the hospital recommended aptimil and this did help a little

domperidone is motilium isn't it? it doesn't do the same job as omeprazole (which effectively reduces the amount of acid produced). I think motilium works as a dopamine blocker and it's normally used in adults for nausea and vomiting (and speeding stomach contents through - I was given it once when I had a bad migraine!).

(I'm not a doctor/health person btw, just happened to have taken both).

I am in the UK yes - my wife is breastfeeding with the occasional bottle here and there and we are using aptimil. I may b worth suggesting the Domeridone to GP but if it is for sickness it may be no good as DS has silent reflux so rarely spits up.

Thanks for advice all!

it does work like omeprazol, and has the added benefit of reducing any inflamation caused by the reflux especially if its silent. may have been given differently in adults. as we are disscussing babys there is a difference. another tip i was given which worked id raise his mattress slightly so he is tilted at an angel this helps to keep stomach contents where they should be. you can buy something to do this but they are quite expensive and a rolled up towel will do the same job
