Breastfeeding dd (13wks) has gone really well, but she is now getting more green coloured poos. Should I be concerned by this? She is still gaining weight fine and seems very healthy.

Green poo is fine as far as I know & happens from time to time. One of the many baby mysteries!

dennya - mine had more green poos when he was unwell with a minor cold or somthing like that. Nothing to get worried about. They will become curry yellow again very soon !

dennya, i was also stunned to learn from MN that sometimes BF babies can go days on end without a poo at all! apparantly it is to do with BM being such a complete food that it is literally all utilised by the body. Wish i'd known all this the time because you will no doubt soon encounter RL people (probably HV's) telling you that green poos are bad - they're not so don't listen

I remember reading a suggestion on here that to avoid getting worried about green poo the best advice is to wear sunglasses when you change dc nappy! lol! thats the advice I now take!

My son had a mysteriously green one yesterday...he seems perfectly happy though! And he can go a couple of days without going at all- although i don't think it's because all the b/milk is being utilised...when he goes after a break, he really goes!

I was told that green poo is a sign that they are getting too much foremilk, as the milk moves through the digestive system too fast to change from greenish to yellowish. As long as they are gaining weight, there should be nothing to worry about.

Hi

Green poo does happen on occassion - colds, teething etc. - but if it goes on for a long time, it is a sign that your baby may not getting enough high-fat milk. Ideally, a baby the age of yours can poo anything from every day to once a week/10 days, but you want it to be yellowish and copious most of the time. However, it is only a sign, and it's pretty subjective - I mean how many different shades of green are there? It might be worth you chatting to a BF Counsellor so you can go into more detail...? If you don't want to, you could just try to keep your baby on one breast for as long as possible - don't change her over until she's come off of her own accord, which indicates that she really has had enough. The fat in breastmilk is a bit like the hot part of hot water in a tap...if you turn it on after a long interval it takes a while to get hot/get really fatty, if you turn it on after only 10mins, it doesn't take so long...be guided by your baby. It's unlikely to be a problem so long as your baby's latched on well and the feed lengths are determined by her and not you.
