Tongue Tip private options

We have a 2 week old girl who is struggling to put on weight, which we believe is due to Tongue Tie, the local hospital are not being overly helpful and we currently have no idea how long we would need to wait to see a EnT consultant.

Has anybody had this done privately if so where?

We have phoned s few hospitals and none of them will treat a 2 week old.

Where abouts in the country are you OP? Posters may be able to recommend someone if you give a rough area. You could also Google for lactation consultants in your area, there is one near me who works with a surgeon to do the snip and then provides follow up consultations. 2 weeks doesn't seem too young to me, the sooner the better I would have thought.

Whereabouts in the country are you OP? My DD had her TT snipped at 17 days old by a private lactation consultant. If she does have a TT then the sooner it's done the better really.

How did you contact the hospital - was it via a referral from your GP? If your GP is supportive they may be able to help you. I had a DD2's tongue tie dealt with privately in a bit of a panic, and I later (in fact, immediately) regretted it.

Most lactation consultants who will cut a tongue tie will come out to your house for around £100. The only time it becomes slightly more difficult is if it is a posterior tongue tie, as some people don't cut them, but you should still be able to find one.

most are cut within days of birth. My daughters was missed and therefore was cut around 6 weeks

NotWithoutMyMerkin - I wouldn't say "most", actually. In my experience no-one ever checks for tongue-tie (even in the case of DD1 who fell off the bottom of the charts), so I would guess most tongue ties are probably not even recognised. Disclaimers: I have a tongue tie and I am A-OK.

DD1 began to gain weight slowly, we weaned to solids early and she is now fine, but not snipped.

With DD2 I felt more clued up and so I had the snip done privately at home, but it was horrible, it bled a lot, and I cried. In the end I'm not sure her feeing improved.

Mabel, I entirely agree, I worded it wrongly.

Most diagnosed tongue ties are cut soon after they are spotted by a midwife. However a hell of a lot of tongue ties are missed and so not cut at all or until later

OK - sorry just didn't want anyone to think that it's normal that most are dealt with really quickly/smoothly!! Thanks for clarifying.

I would second that getting a TT snipped isn't necessarily a magic bullet. DDs took ages to heal. Feeding improved a bit but it was a far from miraculous difference.

Whereabouts are you? I know of a couple of options in West Yorkshire if that's any use.

We had DS PTT cut at 3 weeks privately by a lactation consultant (because the NHS waiting list was 3 weeks). It reattached and we had it done again at 9 weeks by laser. If I had it done again, I would go straight for the laser option asap, as they can cut more effectively and there is less chance of reattachment which can be a problem with PTT. Having said that, we have not yet seen any improvement in feeding (DS is now 11 weeks). I would make sure that you have a knowledgable lactation consultant lined up for afterwards in case you need to check for reattachment, or need help with anything else eg suck training exercises.

By the way, hope you're all being kind to yourselves mrjaz. I know how stressful it is to have a baby who's not gaining weight as expected. Two weeks is still very young so fingers crossed things will get easier for you.
