baby arching back, wriggling, crying...?

Is this a sign of wind? Tried het on C & G comfort awhile ago and it seemd to stop but now have recently put her back normal milk to see how it goes, but she seems very unsettled. She's a very sicky baby ( used gaviscon when not using comfort milk) - when's she likely to grow out of the screaming/sicking? She's 5 months old - no problems with weight gain - she's larger than average! Do i need to move her onto comfort 2 at 6 months? Also what about when i wean her in 4 wks, do i used formula mild in cooking or normal cows milk?

has she always been like this?

chunckster · 03/10/2006 13:03

On and off but never when she had comfort milk

sounds like my dd who was incredibly windy she is now 15 weeks and hasn't had it for a while.

i think you can use cows milk for cooking with from 6 months but only as a drink from a year.

chunckster · 03/10/2006 13:05

Is the arching back, wriggling and sometimes appearing to strain (she's never constipated!) a sign of wind then?

whats comfort milk?

alibobble · 03/10/2006 13:08

my dd does this too. I'd be interested in other people's thoughts on it because she was always a nightmare to burp when smeller and had to shovel infacol in like there's no tomorrow. Have relaxed with it a bit now but still give it. Is it wind or something else?

chunckster · 03/10/2006 13:11

Comfort milk is made by Cow and gate - it's partially broken down so easier for the baby to digest

Arching back, crying and discomfort- may be reflux .. speak to HV

poppiesinaline · 03/10/2006 13:16

yes, I was thinking reflux too.

chunckster · 03/10/2006 13:17

spoke to hv ages ago - she was useless! discussed with gp who gave gaviscon which does stop her being as sick. also tried sma staydown/enfamil ar - both of which just made her produce thicker sick!

but if it didnt happen at all while on Comfort milk

milk intolerance of some kind ???

or just ... wind? Not sure. Would speak to your HV or GP though cos it sounds like your DD isnt comfy.

poppiesinaline · 03/10/2006 13:18

ah ! posts crossed! at crap HV. There def sounds like somethings going on though. I would badger your GP again or can you see a different GP or HV?

chunckster · 03/10/2006 13:29

Strange thing is though, the problems only happen during the day. She has normal formula before bed, sometimes brings up a little but sleeps thru night - usually about 12 hours!

Your HV sounds pretty useless to me! Could well be reflux (which typically causes arching back) in which case hopefully both the pain and the vomiting will begin to slow down soon. DS has more or less grown out of his now at 7 and a half months. Solids and being upright more often helped a lot.

chunckster · 03/10/2006 13:44

I wonder if i should put her back on the C & G comfort until i start to wean her?

OP posts:
poppiesinaline · 03/10/2006 13:48

wouldnt reflux be 24/7 though?

If she was happier on the comfort milk I'd pop her back on it

chunckster · 03/10/2006 13:52

It's wierd as i thought, if anything, reflux would be worse at night! But she shows all the signs of it during the day when on normal formula but it doesn't bother her at night. maybe i should go back to comfort milk in the day with normal formula for her bedtime feed and try to reintroduce normal formula for all feeds when i wean her?

hiya my sis's babe was like this. i'd definately put her back on omnio comfort straight away. the arching of the back, or 'crabbing' is a sign of discomfort. keep her on this milk until she is one and only very gradually wean her on to cows milk as a drink then. when it is weaning time you must go very slowly and keep a watchful eye on which foods may upset her, you should be ok if you stick to veg and naturals but be careful with baby yoghurts.i would mix her cereals with omnio comfort at first and then only when you are well into 3 meals a day introduce cows for mixing porridge etc. hope this helps.

I was thinking reflux too, and it's not necessarily a 24/7 thing, DD was often better with it at night than during the day, maybe because she was calmer when she fed in the evening so got less wind which helps the sickness/pain.

Definitely agree with keeping her upright after feeding, has she started to sit up yet? This can help enormously as gravity keeps it all down.

I found things improved greatly when I started her on solids, but she only stopped her gaviscon at 11.5 months, didn't have any trouble with cow's milk though, if anything it seemed better than formula....
