Unsettled DS two weeks..at wits end

Hello ladies

Need some advice on DS, he's turning two weeks old tomorrow and is bottle fed on Aptamil first milk but ever since he came home from hospital I've noticed he screams when pooing, he goes red, pulls his legs up and only settles sometimes when given a bottle again (I know he's not just hungry because most of the time he's been recently fed). His poo is soft and yellow so it couldn't be constipation, it seems worse at night from around 1am and can last to 4am, sometimes these hours are caused by him trying to poo other times he just won't settle and again not hunger since he is fed in between these hours.

My question is we bought aptamil comfort for colic and constipation hoping it would ease him abit...is this a good idea or should we just stick with the first milk? I hate seeing him like this every time he needs to poo or sleep at night Sad

Sounds normal to me. DD2 was like this every night from 4-7am till she was about 13 weeks I think they are getting used to their digestive system.

You could try a dummy rather than the bottle when he is not hungry. Over-feeding could make his digestion problems worse.

Mc, was there anyway you comforted your DD?

September, we give him his dummy but he'll only take it sometimes, other times he spits it out Sad

I agree with giving a dummy instead of a bottle if he needs to comfort suck.

Also, the drawing up of legs could be wind? Have you tried Infacol?

I also wouldn't use comfort milk, especially at two weeks old. Stick with the first milk.

We try with the dummy, diving, but he spits it out most times other times he'll take it, spit it out then cry and we've winded him for two hours before with no luck, he still cries and fights us when we try Sad

We gave him infacol for a few days but during those his poos became less and only at night where he became really bad, I didn't know if that was to blame so I just cut it out. The comfort milk was probably a stupid idea but I just hate seeing my little guy like this Sad

Have you tried different types of dummy? The MAM newborn sizes ones are usually a winner. Sometimes it can be hard to find a type the baby will accept. Some just won't take a dummy. The fact he seems to accept milk when distressed does suggest he's comforted by sucking though.

kola my ds is very similar to yours just several weeks ahead, he is 11 weeks tomorrow. We tried comfort to hoping that would help, so don't feel silly about trying it. One of my friends suggested prune juice mixed with sterile water which does help, we give it each time he gets a bit backed up. Although if you aren't comfortable giving him it then I wouldn't. We are heading to the Dr's later in the week I hope they may prescribe lactolose to help!

Both my bf dds have been exactly the same - my dc2 is 2 and a half weeks and I was convinced she was constipated except it's impossible, as she's pooing yellow liquid and also likes to comfort feed as sometimes she goes while eating, think it relaxes them. Dd1 was fed lots of infacol, legs bicycled, only time and walking her around in her baby carrier helped - they also relax and poo while sleeping. It gets better after 6-12 weeks, their digestion is just ropey at this age.
