Struggling to get baby onto bottle

Our little boy is 4 months old, we've been trying to introduce a bottle for the last two months but he's having none of it - won't take formula or expressed. I'm going back to work in January and I'm really starting to worry about what he'll eat while I'm at work if this continues! Any mums put there that were in a similar situation? How did you cope? Any advice? Many thanks in advance x

I finally got some formula into mine with a sippy cup (the ikea one) in the bouncy chair or propped up on the sofa rather than being held - was messy but baby seemed happier with that for some reason.
With the bottle, I never really cracked it but had most success with the fastest possible flow - I ended up poking a chopstick through the hole in the teat to make it bigger!

My dd finally took a bottle with a MAM teat - a latex one. Also getting someone other than you to give the bottle may help.

Watching with interest. I also have a 4mo bottle refuser.

Have you tried MAM bottles? Their website says 94% of babies accept their bottles... Although mine appears to be in the 6% that doesn't!

I also had some advice to try a bottle after the morning feed when they're not hungry or tired. I haven't tried it yet but I will...

I never persuaded mine to take a bottle but succeeded with formula in a nuby grip n sip cup.

DS1 is 9 wks and we started at 3 wks. He's ebf but we just wanted the option to give him a bottle occasionally. He now takes one but I've been through every bottle on the market (spent a fortune) so Avent, Tommee Tippee, MAM, NUK and Dr Browns. Only one he's never refused is the wide Dr Browns, next best us NUK with a latex teat. We found he would never take one in the evening but that clashed with his grumpy time so we tried during the day. Result, he took it. Then by accident I found that he likes the milk really warm, warmer than mine. So by trial and error he now takes one happily but the temperature thing would be my biggest tip followed by Dr Browns or NUK bottles.

I went back to work when ds was 8 months. He wouldn't take a bottle and just ate dairy during the day and fed more when I was home.

I'm going back to work next Monday. DS is 7.5 months and has never taken a bottle despite months of trying and all kinds of bottles.

He will now take a bit of milk from a sippy cup, but similar to Imeg, he will only take it if it's offered front ways on, while he is in the highchair.

PetaPipa · 27/10/2014 23:20

Oops, I meant Nuk, as a pp has said. With the latex teat, as it is really soft.

Another vote for Nuk bottle and latex teat here! was like magic!

mine also likes the milk hot. He wont take it even warm, has to be hot!

Thanks all - really appreciate the advice and support. Funnily enough the NUK bottle and latex teat are the ones we're having the most success with - will try the milk a bit warmer as he seems to like it better when its first made - perhaps he wants hot milk too! Will also try a cup!! :) x
