Red patch on breast

Can anyone help? My left breast has a big red patch on it. It feels hot to touch but isn't causing me any pain. In the night I felt hot and then cold and shivery and was worried it was the start of mastitis. But there is no lump so not sure what it is?

Really? Even though there is no lump and it doesn't hurt to feed? I've only had dd for just over 2 weeks so really don't want it now!!

Take some ibuprofen, have a hot bath and express in the bath and let teh baby feed as much as possible from that side. I got it after 2 weeks and again, mildly, last week after 16 months!

Blocked duct at the very least. Read everything you can on MN about clearing it - feeding, combing, the lot, and get to it. If it doesn't clear up by tomorrow, get to the doc.

I did clear a duct, and felt very proud of myself. But do be careful, please.

may be blocked duct - knead it to try and break it up.

If you feel shivery I think you need antibiotics. Make an appointment with your GP. It's totally curable. Keep feeding.

I felt shivery in the night but not at the moment. Will do a bit of research on mumsnet

There are lots of good tips. Try them all.

compo · 30/09/2006 19:20

okay, one tip is to take nurofen as it can cure a mild case. Do you think I should take some now?

only have Ibuprofen which is anti inflammatory. Shall I take that?

Tinker · 30/09/2006 19:27

Yes, ibuprofen is fine, recommended for mastitis.

Yes take that. If you feel worse tomorrow call the out of hours gp and see if he/she will write you a prescription for antibiotics or a stronger anti-inflammatory

Hi - have a 7 week old and have had mastitis 3 times now - didn't have a lump as such, more lumpiness; definitely red patch and the shivers - had a bad temperature, particularly with the 2nd one. I went to GP out of hours on that one - the quicker you catch it, the better you will feel - I really empathise - it's so awful but will get better with antibiotics. I was told to take paracetamol too. I was told by lots of people to give up bf but thankfully things have improved and I really hope I don't get it again - you could try cabbage leaves, hot baths etc but if it's mastitis antibiotic are needed as you don't want an absess - good luck, let us all know how you get on!

thanks everyone. So sorry to hear you've had it 3 times already cmm. Well this morning the red patch is very much improved, almost gone. Took more ibruprofen in the night so maybe it was a mild case. Will be keeping an eye on it though. Thanks again
