Help! Suddenly windy/colicky

My 10w/o dd is suddenly very windy and uncomfortable, she squirms, grunts, goes rigid when feeding and sometimes point blank refuses the boob. If she doesn't get fed immediately on cue she screams. She is waking every 1.5hrs in the night and doesn't go down after a feed without 30-40 mins rocking and then wakes again in an hour or hour and a half HmmHmm. This is all new as of this weekend, very distressing. I mix feed but had always wanted to get closer to ebf, but this has put a real spanner in the works as sometimes when she screams the only thing that will calm her is the bottle. I can hear that she's windy but no amount of burping is getting it up. Just started infacol today, how long should it take to work??

Infacol takes a while to work, have you tried gripe water? I found that more helpful as it had immediate results.

When you say bottle, do you mean formula? Are there any other symptoms like constipation, diarrhea, rash? I am wondering if it could be because she is not tolerating the increase in formula. Obviously it started before, but I am wondering if it has got worse because of the formula.

Or it could just be a growth spurt. I wonder if she is trying to up your supply because. she's having a spurt, but isn't being satisfied by the boob as your Boobs haven't quite got the message yet. I completely understand why you are mix feeding, but it doesn't help when your baby needs to up your supply by cluster feeding.

Thanks for responding flan, we try to only give her a morning and an evening bottle as standard, one more in emergencies only (ie if out and she won't go on boob). I pump when she gets the bottle. I have been concerned about boobs dealing with growth spurts so try to do all the demand feeding by boob in the day but is tough work when she thrashes and doesn't go on. Have been perplexed as to how ff babies 'tell' the feeder about growth spurts.....
In other news she was quite upset last night and seemed to be boob refusing but the infacol pre-feed seems to actually help get her on... Fingers crossed. Haven't tried gripe water yet tho has been recommended, can I use both infacol and GW?

Yes they can be used together. I found gripe water really good.

Ff babies don't need to cluster feed because they will just drain the bottle and then you know you need to increase the amount you are offering.

Keep trying with the boob, it sounds like you are doing everything right. Just to check, has she been checked for tongue tie? That could explain why she is struggling with the boob but is ok with a bottle. it is much easier for a tongue tied baby to feed from a bottle.

Oh and definitely no sign of oral thrush? No white bits in her mouth?

flymo79 · 16/10/2014 17:22

No white bits in mouth and dd has been checked for TT. I think she has a lip tie but HV didn't give a hoot.

To help coax wind out of her bottom you could try lying her on her back and gently pushing each leg to opposing shoulder in turn and holding it there for 15-20 secs. Works best with no nappy but I'd keep one under her bottom in case poonami ensues! I think I read this tip on MN originally, (thank you, whoever posted it!) and was the only thing that helped DD.

Tiger in the tree hold and walking fingers clockwise round tummy/massage can also help if you haven't tried them. Smile

Thanks gunpowder, I've been doing massage but hadn't heard about the legs thing...
