Which formula for secondary (post-viral) lactose intolerance?

My 13 month old DS had a stomach bug last week and is still having explosive loose nappies. The doctor thinks he has secondary (post-viral) lactose intolerance and told us to water down his milk a bit but not to change anything. A quick scout of the internet (eg Great Ormond Street website) suggests it's best to cut out lactose until the stomach has had time to heal, then gradually reintroduce this.

Anyone had experience of this? Should I get some lactose-free formula for a couple of weeks?

Shouldn't think he needs formula. Could you try almond milk or koko? You could make sure he has calcium rich foods like broccolli, chick peas (hummus), tinned salmon and sardines and dried figs. You can also buy vegan cheese, but I've never tried it.

you can get lactofree milk which is cows milk with the lactose removed - it is with the other milks in the fridge in the supermarket

DD had this at 6 months and we were prescribed SMA lactose free formula but never actually used it as by the time we got it (lots of letters going to and from the consultant at the hospital) she was over it!

you could also use colief in her existing milk to break down the lactose

Just saw that he's 13 months, as PP's have said, do you need to give him formula?
