Feeding only one side?

TheGirlAtTheRockShow · 11/10/2014 14:43

DD has always preferred left side over right, but is now pretty much refusing to feed from the right. I have forceful letdown and fast flow, which is more of a problem on the right which is, I'm guessing, why she doesn't really like feeding that side. Now she screams if I try to put her to that side and wont calm and feed till I put her to left.
I'm assuming she will get what she needs feeding only one side. But will lack of demand on the right cause supply issues on the left? Will I start to have supply issues?

No your other boob will cope. I stopped using the right side a few months in and finished at 3 1/2 years. No supply problems.

How old is she?

Just asking because my eldest started off being a bit scared of the more forceful side, but grew to prefer it as she got older. For a few weeks I was often offering it second or block feeding a little on that side to help her out.

She's 15 weeks and she started refusing right in last couple days. She feeds with nipple shields as was premature, small and couldn't latch.

If she's that little and using shields I would maybe would keep trying. Does she attempt it without the shields sometimes so she can learn?

You could try feeding her in a different position on the problem side, to see if it helps. e.g. If you normally feed in a cradle/cross cradle position then try in rugby hold instead, or vice versa.

TheGirlAtTheRockShow · 11/10/2014 22:19

We try without nipple shields every day - she has fed twice without. Been trying for 10 weeks! Tried different positions and will only feed in cradle position. I can't seem to get both of us comfy any other way. I keep trying right side and she has reluctantly taken it couple times today, but mostly just cries.

Or lying on the bed perhaps?

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 11/10/2014 22:23

You've probably been told this, but sometimes lying back can reduce your flow. So pile up a load of pillows and lie back so she's feeding slightly 'uphill'? Can still be in a cradle hold.

Yup, tried the lying back with DD "facing up" as in the biological nursing position - she struggles to latch, even if she does she slips no matter how much I try to support her.
