Poor latching!

DS is almost five weeks, bf is going quite well but I'm not getting the latch right. I have particular trouble on my left, my nipple is quite painful as a result and the breast is quite tender. A bfc told me the tenderness is as a result of stimulation of nerves where baby is not latched correctly.

I tried biological nurturing for a few weeks but couldn't get the latch right. I've switched back to the cradle hold as I couldn't master the rugby ball hold! But baby doesn't tip his head back, he has a nice wide mouth but then when he comes close to my breast he tips his head too far in and kind of nuzzles me, and ends up slurping in the nipple and being attached on the end. On the left this is causing pain :( oddly enough the right doesn't seem to hurt no matter how he latches but I'm concerned he's not feeding properly. We have had a couple of green nappies and he is quite windy which I've read could be a result of poor latching?

Any tips to get his head to tip back so I can get the nipple in correctly? Also how do I stop the nuzzling and the slurping? I really want to get this right! I dread feeds on my left breast, it hurts all the time, feeding or not :(

Mine prefers my left to my right. Sometimes (at night- she fusses a lot) I gently cup the end of my breast in my hand (making a C shape of my hand) which makes it slightly conical. She finds it easier to latch if she's in a thrashy mood if I do this. I DON'T shove the boob in or anything, just gently cup it.

I have exactly the same and at ten weeks am sorely tempted to just feed on one side.... Right is so painful now. Did bf consultant not help to correct the latch? I have been trying to get this sorted for weeks as it hurts all the time now too, not just when feeding

They did help me and when they showed me how to do it at the clinic it was easy! Now I'm home I get it right maybe one in ten feeds? Very frustrating. Have been in touch with an LLL leader tonight and I'm going to a meeting on Tuesday now to see if they can help me.

Feeding on one side...my baby often will take both breasts at a feed so I'm not sure I could do that?

Sorry to hear you are in pain to :(
