Nipple shields

Not posting a question here, I just thought I'd share my experience in case it was helpful to anyone.
My DS has a high palate and my nipples were pretty flat, so he just couldn't latch. After 3 horrible days of finger-feeding with expressed colostrum a lactation consultant suggested nipple shields. They worked like magic! He latched immediately and fed really well.
My midwife advised me to try and do without as she felt it would affect my milk supply. My attempts without never worked. He became agitated, clawing at his face and screaming, so we just continued with them. They never affected my supply, baby is on the 98th centile for everything and I didn't find them a hassle. I was happy to stay on them indefinitely.
But... DS apparently had other ideas. One day at about 3 months of age he just refused to latch on the shield. He just pushed it out his mouth and became more and more upset. I took off the shield and he latched immediately. Since then he's managed to feed without shields. I've no idea what happened, why he could suddenly feed and why he took against the shields. I can only think he gets milk quicker this way or he doesn't like the plastic taste.

Glad you found something that worked for you Smile

So glad you found something that worked! And so relieved to read the end of your post. I, too, have to use nipple shields to BF DD. I have been trying to get rid of them as I do find them a hassle, however DD is refusing to feed without. Seeing that your son eventually decided to feed without them gives me hope DD will too. Thank you for sharing your experience Smile

I'm very pro nipple shields too - only way DS would latch even after tongue tie release at 10days.
Hoping he too just decides to go off them!! He's 8 weeks.
No supply issues here but I have loads of milk & still pump a couple of times a day.

Same experience here - DS refused to feed until I found medela shields at 4 days and he latched straight away.

At 5m 2w I tried him without (left the clean shields downstairs!) and bingo - he was away and did not want them back!

Feeds are 10x quicker but I do wish id bothered correcting his lazy shield latch from the start as it can be very sore and I've been told he's unlikely to change - plus it's hard to do deep latch technique with a wriggly 16lb baby with his own agenda! Smile

I used them successfully with DD1. She really preferred them. I also found the Medela ones good. DD1 had a posterior tt.

DD2 (7 weeks) hates them though. I have ordered latex ones to try with her. I have oversupply with her and I hope the nipples will slow the flow to a manageable rate so we can leave the house.

I'm finding the mothercare own brand 'innosense' ones the best, even over medela.
