Osteopathy for bf problems?

Rosie1988 · 06/10/2014 15:14

Hello
Iv had about 4 weeks of bf issues...fast flow, over production of milk, breastfeeding strike from baby, reflux. I received lots of support of people on here so thank you so much to those who did support me.

The last 4 days things have cooled down a bit, iv had to express the 1oz so I have a let down then feed my 10week old son. Then he will only feed laying flat with me laying on the sofa. I went to an expert today who said she suspects reflux hasn't helped and tried other positions with me which he did not like at all. He refused to feed.

I am wondering about people's experiences with osteopathy in babies and if you think it will help with the problems I am having. I didn't express on the last feed and he seemed to manage the let down but still will only feed laying down. He was fine upto 6 weeks old, which makes me wonder if it will help or not?

Thanks

Not sure on that one. Hopefully someone with experience will be along soon Smile

Interested as DD2 will only feed lying down due to oversupply. A lot of it ends up in a puddle underneath us.

Rosie1988 · 07/10/2014 12:39

Exactly same problem as I have plus reflux. I'll let you know how it goes I'm trying next Wed.

Yes! It definitely works.
My dd head changed shape a bit.
Latch no longer painful after 3 weekly appointments.
Make sure you see someone qualified in infant cranial osteopathy.
Good luck!

pigsunited · 07/10/2014 13:37

I hope it works as I'll be trying it this week!

flopsybunny45 · 08/10/2014 21:51

Sadly - a HUGE waste of money for us.
Bf, having got off to a really good start, went your way at 7 weeks.
We tried everything, by 4.5months DD was on 1st percentile.. they finally realised she was allergic to milk, coming through my bm.
She was prescribed special milk and was a changed baby from bottle one.
It was sad for me but life-changing for her. I hope co works for you. You just have to try everything in the hope that it works.

Thank you for your reply. Like you say it's worth a go. I am lactose intolerant but my older daughter has never had a problem. Do you think my son could be more prone to allergy because of my intolerance? I drink soya now but do have diary occasionally as it's so hard to cut out. Thanks!

Huge waste of money for us too. Problem was DS had silent reflux and multiple allergies, including milk and wheat, which was passing via breast milk.

Cranial Osteopathy is woo with no evidence behind it. Probably won't do any harm except for costing you money.

Justgotosleepnow · 09/10/2014 21:53

Yeah right holly you are telling me that my dd skull didn't change shape after her appts. And the latch just mysteriously fixed itself at the same time as the osteo appts.
Rubbish.
It works.
I suspect it's like many medical things that it may depend upon whom you see. But the person treating my dd got it exactly right.

hollie84 · 09/10/2014 21:59

I don't think even a cranial osteopath would claim they change the shape of a skull to be honest!

geekaMaxima · 09/10/2014 22:00

YY to the woo. No evidence - or even a plausible theory - behind it. Anecdotes are not data.

MrsMinton · 09/10/2014 22:04

It changed the shape of my DS head too. He was a rapid birth with the cord round his neck. He couldn't latch on and had dreadful colic and would only sleep upright on my chest. Two sessions of Osteopathy and he was much better. After four he slept flat and could latch and his head had rounded out more.
We took our second DS at six days old and had no problems (and his birth was even faster!)
I personally feel it's worth it.

StepDoor · 09/10/2014 22:07

All babies heads change a little after they are born - its got nothing to do with osteopathy!

flopsybunny45 · 10/10/2014 08:00

Rosie -

Dairy has always given me eczema and my husband is a coeliac (gluten intolerant) so unfortunately we didn't give baba great genes!
What we didn't realise is that 50% of dairy intolerances in young children are also SOYA intolerances. Even though I had tried cutting milk to combat angry Bf-ing, I had replaced it with soya in my diet and she was prob allergic to that as well.

Sadly, by the time the paediatrician app came through, she was nearly 5 months and had built up negative bf associations... I'm convinced if we'd caught it earlier it would've been enough to just change my diet. As it was I only managed to bf at night when she was sleepy until about 7mo. It is why I try to loiter on here... desperate for someone else to have a different outcome! x

DrKarg · 10/10/2014 10:06

DS had problems latching on the right side and the i developed a pea-sized lump on my nipple that was very painful at each feed. DS was born by ventouse and the osteopath suggested damaged muscles/ ligaments on his neck and shoulders may have been causing the problem. He had two sessions and the problem was fixed within a week. As pp said, make sure you see a specialist in infants.

Justgotosleepnow · 10/10/2014 13:57

Nope, skull changes at week 13 are not normal. Very sloping forehead to perfectly shaped skull.
I am pleased for all the posters on here rubbishing the peoples experiences, they never needed the help lucky them Confused

FullOfChoc · 10/10/2014 14:02

Cranial Oestopathy really helped with both my babies feeding problems.

Well worth it for me.

MrsMinton · 10/10/2014 16:48

My DS was five months when we went so any head changes should have happened. He also started rolling and kicking when he really hadn't before and would do tummy time and lift his head up. I stand by our experience but it's obviously personal. I would never hesitate in recommending it.

hollie84 · 11/10/2014 21:59

Lots of people believe very strongly in homeopathy, crystals, amber necklaces and faith healing too.

MrsMinton · 11/10/2014 22:04

Yes they do and that's their personal choice. As is this.

geekaMaxima · 12/10/2014 11:33

Yes, it's people's personal choice whether they engage with cranial osteopathy, homeopathy, healing crystals, copper bracelets, or any other fringe intervention, so long as they do so in the knowledge that it is not evidence-based treatment and dismissed by many as woo or quackery. People will try anything, especially if desperate.

But cranial osteopathy is particularly pernicious because it's often dressed up as an actual medical intervention. People are sometimes mistakenly led to believe it's a mainstream medical treatment, especially if it's first recommended by a hv or other genuine hcp, and takes place in a clinic alongside physiotherapy, dentistry, etc. But it's not mainstream: osteopaths don't have accredited qualifications with a royal college that regulates practice There are previous mn threads where posters have been in this position and were surprised to hear it was regarded as woo.

But woo it is. There is evidence that the effects of such therapies on infants are placebo effects on the parents because they are the ones filling out crying diaries etc. This same review notes that very few studies report adverse effects so the safety of using such techniques on young babies has not been properly evaluated.

So choose it if you wish. But do so with full awareness that any effects are likely to be placebo effects, that its practitioners have not been through accredited medical training, and that its safety for babies is unclear.
