newbie - few basic questions!

Touch wood mw and Hv happy enough with progress, baby pink/alert and regained birth weight at 11 days.
Just have some newbie questions!

  • Can someone explain in idiot terms fore and hind milk and the rules of how to make the most? I just pop her on one side till she's done, THEN swap if she wishes. If she's taking fequent short feeds I swap hourly.
  • She was born on 25th percentile and having regained that is still there (the graph only starts at 14 days) but then there seems to be a "jump" required to stay there. Hv and mw seem perfectly chilled though. When should she next be weighed, to give her a chance to gain enough to stay in her % ... don't want to fuel any anxiety!

Smile Thanks.

Yeah the mw straight away said she'd probably regained it, but was hungry and had just done a nappy so 1 oz down.
Tiktok Yes I am a bit shaken. On my notes it says "anxious about medical issues" ... The irony being that's why I got some extra visits. To reassure me not to set it all off! Shock And like you say they gave her a clean bill of health.
There's a new parent NCT group near me: I might well join that.

She has just cluster fed ALL night and seems very pleased with herself (now she wants playtime with mummy! Sleep is for wimps!) And did 3 huge yellow poos overnight and several heavy nappies. I'm pretty sure she'd let me know if I wasn't feeding her enough lol!

Sorry one more question: she's been cluster feeding/growth spurty last week. Today/yesterday I've been feeding with 1 hr break at most since 9 pm last night!!
Nappies normal. Obvs quite a few.
Is this just a long cluster feed?

You can label it a cluster feed, yes.....I don't think it matters what you call it, it is within normal for a new baby, and it won't last :)

Thanks!!! In the midst of it you wonder - bless her she was a bit wee at birth and probably just wants to bulk up!
I decided to lay her next to me Co sleep style on the bed- got a nap in! She got milk. All good (except DH who is dealing with nappies lol). Grin

Often they are going more slowly on the second boob. See how it feels after you have started that side. By due at 10, do you just mean she often wakes then or a schedule?

Do you mean no more than three hours? ie You would feed ealier if she asked. That makes sense. Smile

TwoLittleTerrors · 04/10/2014 20:56

I hope it's no more than 3 hours. My 3 week old was born at 39 week but admittedly very petite at 6lb. She doesn't go 3 hours except in the evening. It's more every 2 hours! She is however a fast feeder so feeds range from 5 to 20 min.

And a fuller breast isn't matitis.

TwoLittleTerrors · 04/10/2014 20:59

At least in these early days I found DD2 doesn't empty the breast every feed on the second side.

squizita · 05/10/2014 10:17

Yes mine was 6 lb 14 oz, goes 1-3 hr between feeds (it varies). As a result I do get a full hard boob - I just make sure she has a jolly good feeday to relieve it. I understand it's only a problem if she hasn't fed or you haven't pumped for a while, or if there's a blockage. Also mibe are getting calmer and less swell/flop at 2 weeks+.

Hate to say it Buggerlugs, but if you were feeding 'on demand no more than three hours' then 'on demand no more than four hours' might not be very different. Most healthy newborns do the 'demand' bit a lot Grin. Great news about the weight gain, you must be really pleased.
