Changing to comfort ....

Ds and I struggled to bf for 6 weeks after birth he is now 7 weeks and almost exclusively on formula having some bm that I have expressed about once a day maybe every other day. When he was first born he pooped every other day and quite large poo's. Last week he seemee quite backed up and eventually went 5 times in 24 hrs then 3 times the next day!

Now we seem to have got into quite a good routine at night, feeds at 10.30 sleeps soundly till 2.30/3.30 feeds again and then sleeps till next feed but is grunting and seems very uncomfortable. I struggle to get him to bring up wind in the night, and he is not that great in the day either.

When he was smaller you just had to move him and he would burp now it can take up to 40 mins and he still might not Hmm he was also really farty but not any more.

So I popped him on infacol last week which seemed to help but not so much now, and the health visitor advised gripe water, but I think comfort formula may be the best way forward, especially as he can be prone to constipation. Do I need to go to the dr and discuss changing his formula or can I go get some.

Also if you have any ideas of how to relieve his wind I would love to know :) here is what we already try:

  • burping on shoulder
  • sitting up and patting/rubbing
  • sitting and moving him in a circular movement
  • frog legs, bicycle legs

A few thoughts - it's normal for their pooing patterns to change quite a lot in the first 6 months, as their gut matures. I don't think infacol does anything at all. Gripe water might. You could also try changing his formula - DD got on better with some than others.

Re burping, lying DD on her tummy was quite often most effective, the gentle pressure produced toots at both ends! Grin Also when you sit him up, put a gentle hand under his chin and lift to extend his neck - it opens up the airway.

Thank you rooty

I bought some gripe water and it doesn't come with a spoon or infact more helpfully a syringe Confused

Can I use gripe and infacol at the same time?

No idea! I use my little calpol syringe for everything, just wash it thoroughly.
