5 weeks son hates pooing

I'm putting this in feeding, though I am sure it's not a constipation or a food issue so maybe it should be behaviour? The last week or so my 5 week baby has started to make quite a production out of farting and pooing. He cries, stiffens, grunts when needing to do either. He seems unable to get them out, or hates the sensation so fights it, I can't work it out. His stool is textbook colour, consistency and frequency so he can't be constipated. He was very farty a couple of days ago but not abnormally so now. He also does a thing where he frantically guzzles a bottle to 'push' out a poo, and now he seems desperate to feed when he needs to go like he thinks it's the only way to poop! He barely slept properly last night as he was lying twitching, leg flailing and grunting though eyes were closed. Then when he woke for a feed at 3am he cried and cried and strained to fart and got so worked up he didn't go back down for two hours, he hates lying on his back. He burps so easily, all his wind problems come from the bowels. It's not sustained crying like colic, just a quick burst of shrieks when toilet issues happen. I feel so bad for him and I don't want it to affect his sleep as he gets upset. He pooed last night and this morning so he does get it out but it seems to cause him distress.

It's all very normal at that age - there's nothing wrong and they're not in pain or discomfort - it's just a phase that passes pretty quickly.

I remember my DD used to moan and groan and writhe around in her sleep because she had wind, so ou could try getting more burps out of him so he's more comfortable when lying down? Added bonus would be there would be less wind coming out of the bottom end and more coming out of the top end Smile

Thanks for the replies! Babies are such weird little things. I'm starting to learn that the most awful noises, grunts, groans, moans that he emits are likely fine because it's not crying! He even has a particular moan that sounds like he's going 'noooooooo!' which bothers me so much! So the awful screams and moans during pooping don't seem to be pain as the poos are still soft and yellow and regular. He's chilled a bit more today about the farts, my husband cycled his legs last night to produce a constant stream of farts... I honestly don't think either of us has ever laughed so much. His little expression of surprise with every fart was priceless :) good to know you can get wind down as well as up when they are discontented!
