night-weaning: mum or dad?

Decided, for various reasons, to night-wean 2year old, who breastfeeds 1-3 times a night (doesn't co-sleep). This weekend is a good chance for us to try. Have read a lot of the usual stuff (Jay Gordon, Pantley, etc.)

Normally she wakes, I breastfeed for 15-30mins, then put her back in cot, where she goes back to sleep fine. But if she doesn't get to breastfeed, she gets increasingly hysterical and won't re-settle alone.

Our plan was that Dad would go to her instead, to break the feeding habit. But she’s recently gone into a huge anti-Daddy phase. So trying to decide whether Dad doing the night-weaning would still be ok or whether it would make everything worse. Any advice or experiences appreciated.

not sure if this is a help, but I nightweaned at 14mo and I did it myself. When I gave up last bedtime bfeed at 18mo, it was DP who did the bathtime/bedtimes for a few days following my 'last feed'. DS didn't seem to notice.

I wonder if I was nightweaning now, I'd feel that the double whammy of no milk and no mummy may be too much.

I mean if I was nightweaning now meaning when DS was 2yo

No advice, sorry but wanted to bump it as I am in the same boat and watching avidly. My 26 month old does co-sleep but I am keen to wean him in the hope that he will then sleep through (the older two slept through as soon as they self weaned at around two).

Thanks flipflop; think that's my feeling too about the double whammy. Hope some useful ideas come along for you too, Oscar...

for what its worth, I found nightweaning FAR easier than I ever thought possible and had I known it would have been a matter of weeks before DS was (mostly...) sleeping through, I'd have done it MONTHS earlier!

So it may not be as bad as you're expecting....

Hi Snow, did it take four hours the first time or was he upset every time he woke? I think you have it with the consistency..........
