DH Doing 10pm Feed - Advice

Hi,
This will be a long one, so I appreciate any replies!

We have an event to go to next weekend where I will need to be away from our 2 wks old DS for about 5 hrs. The only way to do this is for me to express enough milk to cover this time period and also get DS used to the bottle.

My DH us also keen to help with the feeding of DS and to give me an opportunity to get to bed earlier in the evening.

So last night we took the plunge and DH fed him at the 10pm feed. I had expressed during the morning 100ml, which should be more than enough for a 2wk old from my reading. I also then expressed a small amount at 9, because I was worried about too much pressure building up until the next feed at 1.15.

Normally D's takes around an hour to feed. This is prob 40 mins of feeding, 20 mins burping, cuddling and changing.

When DH fed him last night, DS guzzled the bottle in less than 20 mins and hardly needed burping (they are anti colic Dr brown bottles...not sure if this matters).

He then got completely hysterical because he was wide awake and looking for more feed. Eventually, we gave in and i gave him some more breasts milk from the same breast that I had expressed at 9. The result of this seems to a very over supplied breast. Absolutely killing me at the moment!!

So I have few questions:

  • general experiences/recollections if someone taking over one of the feeds each day.

-is it normal for newborns to feed so quickly on a bottle? If so, anyone have any experience with managing time difference and LO post feed behaviour when combining breast and bottle feeding.

  • In a perfect world I would just express just bf I go to bed so that DH can do the late feed. However, I need to build up expressed milk stock for next weekend. After last night's debacle and my now hideously sore breast, would love to know how other ladies built up their expressed milk supply without creating an over supply.

Any help appreciated

Well, just to get one thing out of the way, I assume that there is no way for your DS to be brought to you for feeding during your event? And that you'll be able to express during it at some point?

I'm not really sure about building up a stock with one this little, but I do know it's pretty normal for a bf baby to feed much quicker from a bottle, so don't worry about that bit. Smile

kmini - this is a long time for any mum to be away from a teeny new baby of 2 weeks, however they are fed :( Is there absolutely no way you could cancel, or take the baby with you, or have the baby there with your dh, so he can bring your ds to you when needed?

Your baby is only a week old and already you are putting yourself under pressure to get ready for a week's time....days should be relaxed and snuggly, without planning ahead. There is enough to do, without trying to fit all the expressing and practising with a bottle :(

It's causing so much extra organisation and stress for you.

No one organising events expects very new mothers to show up without their babies, do they?

You've left me wondering what sort of event it is.

There is bags of time for you, your dh and your baby to get used to an evening/late bottle. Can you do it in a few weeks time when you have less pressure on you?

Yes, just to agree with Penguins - you will need somewhere private to express at least once during your five hour absence....really, really hope you can think again!
