Has anyone got any experience of these? What are your thoughts? Any particularly nice/good ones and how exactly do they work? (especially can your boobs fall out accidentally!) Managed fine with DD without any but wonder whether worth getting one or two tops specifically designed for it, esp as have bought a sling to feed in and will have busy toddler with me so sitting nice and discreetly won't always be an option.
SO, worth the money or weird?

hmmm I think weird
it's obvious what they are!
I'm actually still wearing mat tops as they are roomy enough to pull up and still cover my flesh/be kinda discreet when bf

sweetkitty · 25/09/2006 14:17

I've never had any special clothes to feed the DDs, just wear normal tops etc.

Save the money and buy some nice tops you can wear after you've finished feeding as well.

My one and only experience was a top I bought for a wedding thinking it would be more discreet.. well, never again - first of all it had a vertical slit so the baby didn't cover it all when feeding so there was a nice bare bit of boob on show (which would have been covered up by a normal top. Secondly there was some leakage which instead of being caught in the muslin as usually happens, had just run down the front of the top so I had a lovely big wet patch when I took baby away! The one and only thing in its favour is that it was generously cut at the front so hid my post-pregnancy tummy better than anything else I could find in the shops.

In answer to your more practical questions, the one I had had slits under a second layer of fabric and no I don't think there would be any danger of boobs falling out, and I could see that they might actually be quite useful if you were using a sling - just buy one in black so the wet patches don't show up so much

I find wearing a vest top under any normal top works well with a sling when out and about... Can lift up normal top, pull vest down a bit to get boob out.. Means tummy is still covered by vest and if DS lets go of boob without me noticing (if I'm busy doing something else), the normal top falls down to cover any embarassment

Hi, I would say yes it's worth the money..
I love the ones where you can feed and not show too much flesh (it's not the boobs I'm worried about showing, but the flabby belly).
There are loads of really good designs out there

I've always done the same as asur. Saved my big stretchy maternity vests and worn them under normal tops. No chance of any post baby flab showing then, they stretch down to my knees!

Hi there - I found the special bf tops with slits in the under layer and a top layer over this were expensive and I found fiddly to use - the top layer has loads of material which you need to bunch up under your chin otherwise it fell over the baby's head! This is really difficult with a sling as the sling holds the material down and you can't pull up the top layer very easily when it is strapped to you! Also the slits tended to show through the top layer so your boobs are outlined by a lovely visible circle - like VPL for the boobs
My top things to wear were/are either vests under a loose top - Asda do some fab very cheap bf secret support vests in the maternity range with clips that undo, much easier than pulling down standard vest straps, and does not constrict your arm movement. Also I bought loads of cheap blouses from places like DP, New Look etc which were great in hot weather. With strategic placement of a muslin over your shoulder this is a no-flesh option and has the benefit that you can do up a shirt with one hand (with a bit of practice!) and it does not show flabby tummy! I fed in sling with this and found it much easier than bf top.

Thanks for all your comments - don't think I'll bother then! Never had any special tops for DD and managed fine with the vest/shirt combination etc. Will save my money for some lovely new clothes when I can fit back into them...

sallyrosie, my sis bought 2 BF tops from H and M for me and i love them, cant imagine they were more than £10 each.they are like a v neck t shirt with a layer of same coloured material in the v. you pull t shirt down and boob pops out but upper bit of fabric covers rest of boob. i also do vesttop under t shirt trick and love the way it hides wobbly bits of tummy over waist band! i have some BF pjs with slit bits and are rubbish!

moondog · 25/09/2006 23:15

Re belly,my smart friend wears a vest under a t shirt but makes slits for the boobs in vest,so she can feed without flashing said midriff.
