Vitamin supplements for baby?

So dd and I had her 9 month check with the HV this week. All absolutely fine but she mentioned that I should be giving her vitamins. Tbh I'd totally forgotten about it and I'm a bit sceptical. My daughter has a good balanced diet, gets plenty of fresh air and sunlight and breast milk still, when she wants it anyway which isn't much these days. I've always believed that taking vitamins just gives you very expensive wee and they're no substitute for a balanced diet. But the HV was adamant that it's recommended for all babies now until they're 5 (she might have said 2, I can't remember now).

So what's the mumsnet consensus of opinion on this? Obviously I'll give them to her if she needs them and they're of benefit but I don't want to if it's just this year's latest fad that they'll change their mind about next year.

Your HV is correct. The main benefit is the Vitamin D, which many people, including babies, risk being short of, especially in the UK (it's Vitamin C supps that gives you expensive wee :)). Vit Supps for babies over six months who are not getting 500 mls of formula milk (because formula milk is already supplemented) have been recommended for many years now.
