Gas problems/ colic

jojomama1507 · 16/09/2014 10:15

My dd is 9 weeks old and has suffered with colic since 3-4 weeks old. I have tried colief, gripe water infacol and denitox and had no success. I think I have come to terms with the fact we will just have to ride it out. At what age do things normally start to improve ? I feel as though things are getting worse rather than improving and wondering what other experiences are. I would be able to cope if it was just a certain time of day but she seems to have problems all day and night and I am really finding settling her difficult other than putting her in her pram that makes me feel like a bad mother

hand holding here.... Going through the same at 4.5 weeks. he sleeps ok at night but it's inconsolable crying from morning to evening.I'm going to try to cut dairy out of my diet and see if that helps.

I'm cutting dairy at the moment as well as I'm having the same problems with DS2. DS1 was the same but I didn't know to try cutting dairy with him. His rage reduced a bit after a couple of months, but he remained a poorly sleeping, clingy, high-needs baby (although is now a truly delightful, fiercely independent toddler who loves cuddles Smile). I do wonder in hindsight, however, if he did have a cow's milk protein intolerance and/or reflux which is why I'm trying it with DS2 (6 weeks). If it doesn't help, I'm going to ask the GP to try him on reflux meds as the symptoms of reflux and CMPI are very similar.

Has your baby got a tongue tie? This can also mimic symptoms of reflux. You haven't said if you're BF or FF.

She used to be really good at night but recently has started being not wanting to be put down and I end up with her in bed with me. She has been ebf since birth but Hv advised me to give her a top up of formula to see if she settles longer and to give me a break, I wasn't sure at first as I though it might make her worse but it doesnt seem to make much difference. I thought about her having CMPI but Hv says that its unlikely. She has never been diagnosed with tongue tie. I may try cutting dairy out for a week see if it helps.

Hi ladies, just a suggestion but do you drink tea or coffee or diet coke. My wee one cried all day yesterday after I had a cup of coffee, i had ordered decaf but must have been caffeinated as she was up til 12pm and was so grumpy. Totally fine today again. Worth trying cutting it out if you do.

ElphabaTheGreen · 16/09/2014 13:24

OP - you need to cut dairy for a minimum of two weeks, but ideally for four, before reintroducing it again. If an HV is suggesting formula to aid sleep then that's a dodgy HV in my book. CMPI or CMA (cow's milk allergy) is also relatively common, which a decent HV should know, especially since there's an awareness campaign running at the moment.

Good luck. I'm on week two of eliminating dairy. It's hellish doing without cake and chocolate while BFing but will be worth it if it cuts the rage!

Yes its been really frustrating talking to my HV and GP about things as neither of them seem to have any suggestions other than it will pass. Well day 1 of cutting out dairy and I'm already in need of chocolate and a coffee lets hope its worth it!

I'm milk intolerant myself, alpro soya light and their almond milk are the best alternatives I have found. Pure dairy free margarine is great for baking if your missing something sweet too! That's if you have time to bake lol!!

ElphabaTheGreen · 16/09/2014 16:38

I was seriously considering starting a support thread for those of us on elimination diets! Grin

YY to almond milk being one of the more tolerable alternatives. Oreos are milk and egg free ('may contain traces of...' due to the factory they're made in, but not actually made with them), and plain coconut yoghurt is actually very nice, especially with strawberries and honey.

I'm a vegetarian normally, so I've basically gone vegan. I'm eating like a caveman a caveman who eats chips

ElphabaTheGreen · 16/09/2014 16:53

Oh, and cutting caffeine made no difference to either of my DSs, so no point in restricting anything you don't have to!

Here is a website about CMA, although it is run by a formula company Hmm so handle with care.
