Hoping someone will be able to help - know tiktok is a guru but sure there are more!
DS is 8 months old - very good at eating food (3 good meals a day with yogurt/fruit) but he has gone off milk almost completely. He will take a feed or two in the night but during the day he isn't really interested. I put him to the boob and he might have just enough to get the milk flowing then isn't interested. He quite likes water from his cup but if I try and sneak exp milk in there he isn't interested. Getting worried that he isn't getting enough milk.
Any advice? Thank you in advance!

Will he eat cereal with milk sneaked in? Or some of (someones - cant remember who!) porridge pancakes?

Olipop · 24/09/2006 20:12

He does have cereal with milk but its a small amount. I did a search before I posted and saw that a 1 yr old was necking about 13 oz a day .....I'd be suprised if he got more than 5 oz.

can you sneak more in? have you tried droppping the water? (just taking a guess - no expert!)

Olipop · 24/09/2006 20:25

I've tried to give him milk in the beaker but he goes potty! so I try water and he loves it. I would rather he got some fluid than none at all. Thanks for your ideas though..they are tricky aren't they!

As long as he's having plenty of dairy in his diet he will be fine. It'll only be a couple of months before you can give him cows milk to drink and wean completely.

I think I have the amounts they should have per day in a book somewhere (including that added to food) will try dig it our to reassure!

Olipop · 24/09/2006 20:37

Thank you stiglet. He loves yoghurt. I just worry that he's not getting enough fluid...and I guess ...if I'm honest I don't think that I am ready for him to stop feeding yet

Are you bfeeding him before his meals?

It's bloody hard to strike a balance, I think. DS2 still feeds quite a lot, but loves water in a cup too. He's 8mo too.

Olipop · 24/09/2006 20:44

I haven't been feeding him before his meals. Should I still be doing that?

If you want him to have more milk, it's something you could try. He'll be hungrier for it then.

He may, of course, just get cross. They're funny little blighters, babies.

Olipop · 24/09/2006 20:50

Like you say Hunker, its hard to strike the balance. I know that he should be encouraged to eat 'real' food but I still have it in my head that milk is the stuff that has everything he needs and that food is not as balanced. If he took just one or two feeds in the day I would be happier (even if they were small). How many does your lo have?

Can't find book - I think they advise roughly a pint a day at this stage (dairy in diet includes in this also). But tbh as long as he's having plenty of wet nappies I wouldn't worry he's not getting enough, just keep offering him the breast!

hunkermunker · 24/09/2006 21:06

DS2 bfeeds a fair bit - still feeds a couple of times in the night, has a big feed in the morning, a big bedtime feed and then "as and when" during the day - maybe another two or three? He didn't have much but milk till a couple of weeks ago though - and still had milk-only days. He didn't have any lunch today, for instance - we were out, it was hassly, so he had a couple of bfeeds instead.

It would actually suit me in many ways if he cut down a bit because I'm going back to work next month - so I've been trying to get him to eat a bit more food. He's beginning to want stuff from my plate more often now, so that's a good sign, I think.

Do you express milk? Perhaps if he won't bfeed, you can sneak it into porridge in the morning, rice pudding after dinner, etc, etc. But expressing can be a faff, I know.
