Cow milk protein allergy & sleep

I was wondering if anyone else has a baby with cmpa who does not sleep well. My 8 month old still wakes at 10, 1, 3 and 5 or 6. He wakes to feed but won't drink much milk. Before he was put on prescription milk he would sometimes be up all night so things have improved but I am still finding it tough going. I have read that there is a link between cmpa and sleep problems so was wondering if anyone else has experienced it and if there are anyway to improve things?

My dd was intolerant. The only way she ever slept was on her tummy.

I also switched last feed to before bath time so she wasn't going to bed on a full stomach. What else is she eating ? Can you be certain it's completely dairy free?

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/09/2014 11:04

Are you using soya products?

leelteloo · 14/09/2014 11:14

Yes he is totally dairy free apart from the formula which is Aptmil pepti 2, this is a special formula for cmpa but it is still dairy. I have been told he is not to have soya milk till he is a year. He has baby food I make him or the odd pouch which is dairy free. He is a very happy chap just has very short sleep cycles. I guess I will probably have to just go with it until he is off the formula and fully weaned?

I think some babies still react to aptamil pepti. We had that a and it was great and dd thrived. But others on here said that the babies can still react so ended up on neocate or nutramagin so might be worth seeing Dr again and saying that although better he still isn't comfortable at night.

I only asked about soya in case you were using yogurts but obviously you have been told to avoid which is good as I only found that out on here Dr never told me when dd was on prescription milk. We were lucky she's fine with soya but I wouldn't have known otherwise.

leelteloo · 14/09/2014 11:39

Ah that's interesting, I think the aptimil formula does not really work for him. He was on nutrimigen before but that gave him terrible nappy rash. I have not tried the other one though so I think I will go back to gp, see if I can try him on it. They will probably be pleased as the Aptmil is so expensive I had to really fight to get him put on it. I also wonder if babies with cmpa actually absorb less from the formula; the body knows it is allergic so doesn't digest it properly and therefore they want to be fed much more often? It's only a theory of mine.

Aptamil. Is expensive but the others are more so. So be prepared to fight.

I was lucky I was dealing with.intolerence not allergy and although getting anyone to listen and not just want to prescribe drugs once I'd convinced them it really worked almost instantly

Definitely go back. It's horrible when they are so uncomfortable Thanks

DS has CMPA & is allergic to soy. His sleep is appalling if he is exposed to either. It took me the best part if a year to really get on top of it, as I totally under estimated things.

I would definitely change to neocate and see if that helps. DS is also super sensitive and can't have any thing that 'may contain traces of' either dairy or soy. Soy lectithins are also out. It's a huge pain but worth it when he sleeps!

leelteloo · 15/09/2014 06:41

Thanks Superwoman, I think I underestimated things too, I have this fantasy that he will just miraculously "grow" out of it, like the dietician said most babies do. So I keep just waiting for that day. But the reality is he is drinking something he is allergic to, however broken down the protein is. The Gp doesn't take any of it seriously and has already said "it's mums like me that are bankrupting the nhs", so I have no confidence in them to help, it was 5 months of me nearly having a nervous breakdown before they did anything. It's totally exhausting.

Also Superwoman, I want to start giving Ds toast as finger food, which spread do you use for you Ds? I read that best of both Hovis is dairy free and that's the bread we buy, so should be ok. Sorry, also one more question, how did you find out about the soya allergy? My dietician said I should be introducing soya pudding to Ds now but I tried on and he had a couple of tiny spoons and started crying almost straight away, is there not some more accurate tests that can tell me exactly what Ds is allergic? And would you recommend by passing the gp and going straight back to the paediatrician? Sorry lots of questions.

My son was allergic to dairy and didn't sleep thru until 13 months.
He had soya from 9 months after flatly refusing neocate, neutrimagin and aptimil pepti! Has issues with GP not being helpful.
The soya milk gave him diarrhoea but it was better than the horrific ezcema.....
He's 3.5 now. Eats cheese and yoghurt like it's going out of fashion, sleeps 7.30-6.45 almost every night and is fit and healthy.

For spread you can use Pure spread, either the sunflower one or a soya one, sounds like sunflower might be best, he won't know the difference anyway.

My son is allergic to cows milk, but intolerant to soya. You can have allergy testing via skin prick, but it only picks up allergies not intollerances I think, so if there is not an immediate reaction of swelling, hives, etc it wouldn't show up. I think with intolerances best thing is to do a food diary and monitor symptoms.

Am busy at the mo but if you have any other questions I'll come back and check this thread later Thanks

Have a look on the Yorke test website to see if the test babies. They do an intolerance test with a tiny bit of blood that you send to them.www.yorktest.com
