Can a BF baby be overweight?

My coming up 10 week old seems massive. He's nearly 15lbs already! He can go a few hours without a feed but most of the time he still likes a 2 hourly feed. Should I start to try cutting back on his feeds?

I would just feed him as often as he wants. It's still early days and he is still very young, so will need feeding quite often as his little tummy is still only titchy. It takes about 2 hours to digest breast milk, which is why they often want a feed every 2 hours or so. How big was your little one when he was born as my son was easily this big at 10 weeks from memory but born on the large side too. They're all so different, the main thing is that he is gaining weight well, I wouldn't get too hung up about how heavy he is as long as his growth trend is good. You can't really over feed them, plus breastfeeding is about is much more than nutrition. Sometimes they feed for thirst, comfort, because they're tired, because they want to chill out, because they enjoy the closeness with mum... The list is endless!

It sounds like you've done a brilliant job feeding him so far and you should be proud of yourself. Smile Don't worry about his size and concentrate on enjoying all those lovely baby cuddles. HTH.

Check with your health visitor but when my baby jumped from the 0.4th to the 50th centile in a relatively short space of time they kept telling me that I can't overfeed when breastfeeding.

DD was born on the 50th percentile and very quickly jumped to well above the top curve in the WHO charts (ebf). Her doctor kept stressing me out saying she was too big, but agreeing that you cannot diet an ebf baby and not coming up with any suggestions for tests for medical conditions - basically all she did was stress me! So I changed doctors to a paediatrician who said I should feed on demand. DD remained above the 98th percentile until about 18 mo (despite eating a home cooked diet with no suger and continuing bf) and then she started walking a lot and shedding the weight. She is now 3yo and on the 60th percentile for weight. Her height however, crept up a lot slower to the 97th percentile and has stayed there since. I think she was eating to put on height. She now has very good eating habits, eats all meats, fish, vegetables, fruit, etc the only thing she's not keen on is desserts so I am very happy with her diet.

BF babies' weight gain isn't linear - you may well find she slims out later.

DD jumped from 25th centile to 95th, then down again to 75th and stayed there since. Her height is 75th too (whereas she was titchy when born) so it all matches up.

Honestly I wouldn't worry.

My 5.5 month old is only 15lbs Grin
He is a little dot though Smile

As has been said you can't over feed a BF baby so if you and baby are happy and the HV doesn't have any concerns then please don't worry Smile You are obviously doing a great job at feeding so enjoy it and don't let your worries over loud what a grand job you are doing.

And congratulations on a gorgeous new baby!!! Flowers

He was born 8lb 9 so nearly doubled himself already the little chunk. He was on the 91st centile last time he was weighed, what happens if they go over the 100th one?
I was just a bit worried as his appetite has really rammed up the past week or so, but I suppose he is just a greedy boy!
Thanks everyone Smile

Nothing happens if they go over 100%! It just shows that the curves need more research. DD quadrupled her weight in the first year, from 3,160 at birth to 12kilos at 1yo.
