Baby eating waaaaaay too much!

My son will be 3 weeks old tomorrow & after issues with keeping any skin on my nipples he's being bottle fed.
About a week ago he went through a growth spurt & feeding frenzy (that was when I lost the skin for the second time & switched to formula full time), so I'd expect him to be feeding normally now but he's just guzzling tons. We started keeping note of bottles a couple of days ago & yesterday he got through about 9 120ml bottles & so far today he's had 11!!! This is the amount actually drunk, not counting any leftover bits. He's only puked once today & it wasn't very much.

I know every baby's different & if he wants it we should give it to him but seeing as about 6 120ml bottles are recommended for his size & age (8lb 13oz on Monday just gone), what he's eating just seems crazy.

I've been trying to distract him if he's fed recently & is wanting more, & if he's had enough, then we're not forcing the bottle into his mouth so everything he's eating is because he wants to.
Is this normal though? Could there be anything wrong making him eat too much? Should I speak to the health visitor? She's already said feed on demand when we mentioned on Monday he seemed to eat a lot but we hadn't realised just how much then.

Thanks

Could you time him? I know they say feed on demand, but if you start a feed at seven am, can he be placated til 10am?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 04/09/2014 20:46

Sorry pressd post too soon, then offer every three hours?

I haven't timed it precisely but I have tried to keep him occupied if he's fed recently but he keeps doing the mouth thing & ends up screaming, then when he gets the bottle, wolfing it down very hungrily :-/

Might it be worth trying the Hungry Baby formula? From what I understand of it, it takes longer to digest, so may keep him fuller?

Tbh I wouldnt worry too much about the guidelines on the tin, I know of no FF baby who drank the same as them - always a bottle or two more a day.

Have you given him a dummy? Babies need to suckle.

Check there are newborn teats on your bottles too - these are harder to get milk through than the older teats.

When dd was slowly needing fewer nught feeds I used to use newborn teats on her night bottles so the effort of sucking would tire her out Blush then older aged teats for daytime feeds.

Hi
I have the same issues and posted almost the exact question a few days ago. My LB is now 5 weeks old and taking 150 ls upto 8 times a day sometime 9. My health visitor is coming on Monday to weigh him and I am so worried she is going to tell me I feeding to much.
The only advice I can off that has worked a little for me is taking him our in the pram for an hour just as he seems to be stirring for a feed this does delay a little but not very scientific and only works during the day.
Sorry for no words of wisdom but just thought I'd let you know somebody else is in the same situation

I just posted about this as I hadn't seem this! My nearly 3 weeks old mixed feeding baby is suddenly chugging down 4-5oz (about 140mls?) bottles at a time and then wanting more 2 hours later. He doesn't throw anything up beyond a tiny bit. I think it's just growth spurt. I actually spoke to my midwife about newborn teats and she recommended against actually as she said they could be too difficult for the baby to suck out of and he might get too tired to eat as much as he should. This might be because my DS had a problem feeding from the breast for that exact reason though (too tired to get the milk out!) I'm sure he'd vomit if it was a case of just eating too much because the teat had a faster flow.
