reflux/oversupply/intolerance? help! (long post, sorry)!

DD is 8 weeks old, bf. She has been a windy baby and it can take an hour to burp her. She bobs on and off for feeds, seems to gulp a lot and feeds can be short, but she is gaining weight well. I can be doing hourly feeds at times but she does not look content after the feed. When she lies down she often flaps her limbs and I can hear her gulping/gasping. We have raised the head of the cot. I tried 3 weeks of no dairy and am generally gluten free due to DS diet. The past two weeks I went back on dairy and she seems windier, less happy to lie down. Her poo was slimy at first but now is more pasty.
GP thinks unlikely to be intolerance and suggested gaviscon. I do have a fast let down though so could it be that?

Not sure what to do next, have had her screaming for the past 2 hours and bringing up wind via both ends!

Have you tried pumping off some of the fore-milk first (and discarding) so that she gets a higher proportion of hind-milk to fore-milk? I think I read that too much fore-milk can create colicky symptoms. In retrospect, I think a fast let down and oversupply of milk (meaning my daughter took more fore-milk than she should have) caused similar problems to what you describe with my DD.

Hope you get it sorted!

Thanks, will try this.

No answers to this sorry op! But you could be describing my situation! Very fast let down, oversupply and a very windy baby that moans and groans in his sleep. I have tried expressing the first milk but ds will get so upset waiting he ends up gulping more and then swallowing more air. I seem to remember reading that unicef have said that fore and hind milk are not helpful terms as its all milk but can't quite remember where I read it sorry! I do think the flapping is down to wind though. It takes an age to wind ds so I fully understand. I will watch other responses with interest.

DD was like this at first. I spent hours trying to figure out how to make it better. We tried the following:
-Gaviscon
-Colief
-Dairy free diet
-Block nursing to reduce supply / get to hind milk
-Feeding lying down to help with forceful let down
-Massage

I have no idea which of these things helped, or indeed if any of them did, but at least I felt I was doing something! She is now 5 months old, still exclusively breastfed and much better. She feeds well and never needs burping. She still farts like a trooper though Grin For the last month she has been medication free and I can eat what I like.

It felt horrible at the time but now I can look back and realise it was such a short time in her life and ours. Hopefully time will improve things for you too. If you want to ask any questions, or just speak to someone who has been there very recently, pm me Smile

I had very strong let-down too (think Niagara Falls!), and eventually started bfing side-on lying down. Helped a lot. Maybe it will help relieve your DCs symptoms in the first instance? Also a useful position for a kip for yourself at the same time! Grin

I never got the hang of feeding lying down with my first DC but will give it a go. I think part of the problem is she tends to root around when in discomfort so I would feed her when really she needs winding- and that causes more wind!

i would try gaviscon.
ds had similar symptoms and gaviscon made a huge difference.
