No doctor will ever tell you this but breastfed babies have much worse colic than any bottle fed baby...

Oh, well, if it's a well-known fact she must be right then. Idiot.

WKF - code for 'I just invented it but don't want to admit I was talking out of my behind'. Clearly.

Nutjob

Did she bfeed? Is she trying to brag in some backhanded mentalist fashion?

milkandhoney · 19/09/2006 23:02

Could it possibly be that "no doctor will ever tell you this... because it's all a load of bs"!?

JoolsToo · 19/09/2006 23:04

hunkermunker · 19/09/2006 23:19

Great

Seriously though, ishoo city. Do a big fake sneeze and say "ishoos" while you do it.

Sticks head above parapet*

I have read that poor positioning can contribute in a big way to collick (due to gasping of air etc causing build up of wind) but as any BFer will tell you, poor positioning brings with it a whole host of issues in itself and needs to be sorted ASAP for the sake of your nipples and milk supply if nothing else!!

She is clearly bitter and/or guilty that she didn't BF though!

Hate to sound controversial but there may be truth in that for some people who have extremely fast let down and drown the baby and leave LO gulping and taking in loads of air and not burped properly. A bottle teat may be slower and easier to feed from. I find this when my ds has EBM.

PinkTulips · 20/09/2006 17:31

thats wind amijee.... colic is defined as bouts of unconsolable crying lasting for longer than three hour more than three times a week

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 20/09/2006 17:35

on a serious note I think DS1 suffered really badly from colic. He most definitely had very long bouts of crying, on a very frequent basis - probably daily(?). But I'd always been told that Breastfed babies don't get colic so just 'put up' with a screaming baby for months!

mumandlovingit · 20/09/2006 18:05

i was researching lactose intolerance as my two children suffered badly with wind and other problems and according to research there is now a link between lactose problems and screaming babies even if they havent got diarhoea like they told me when mine were little(mine were constipated so according to doctors etc didnt have a problem with lactose)
breastmilk has apparently got alot of lactose in it alongside normal baby formula milk.if that is true then yes, colic can occur in breastfed babies the same as bottlefed and my last midwife told me if i ever have another one not to even think of breastfeeding or bottle feeding normal formula and to automatically go onto a low lactose or lactose free formula if i want to eliminate the chance of it all happening again.
something to think about.i looked it up and found it somewhere on one of the sites that was comparing omneo comfort milk alongside others for the lactose contents

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 20/09/2006 18:06

but he's never been lactose intolerant! - the colic stopped after a few months - but I continued breastfeeding for over a year!

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 20/09/2006 18:46

Mumandloving it, I was admitted to hospital at a few weeks to give aprents a break as I screamed so much (called severe colic then), I have a milk intolerance. Likewise ds1 and ds3. Ds2 never had 'colic' and isn't intolerant either

Interestinga boutt he no BF bit... was woneringt hat with dh t'other day

NotAnOtter · 20/09/2006 18:51

hunker LOVE that - i am practising now ' a a a a a ishoos!'

mumandlovingit · 20/09/2006 20:15

i know that not all babies with volic are intolerant to lactose, its just an interesting thing i found out that i thought id share.me being me didnt realise that breastmilk would have lactose in too and until now the link with the screaming wasnt associated.
