I have been having problems with breast feeding from day 2 onwards (posted in the early days and had a lot of support from you lovley MNers :) ) DS used to latch perfectly when it was just colostrum but when my milk came in he started having problems latching and I was expressing every feed and giving it to him from a bottle. I fed him ebm for about two weeks until my lovely health visitor managed to get him latched on and feeding again. The first few days were ok but the last few weeks it's been getting worse. DS is very gassy and is burping and farting almost constantly, he makes a clicking noise whilst feeding (does this with a bottle too and always has done),chimps down on my nipple, takes forever to latch and when he does latch he comes off every few seconds. Sometimes I have to hold his head against my boob to get him to stay there for more than a few seconds. He has also started throwing up quite a lot since Friday and the doctors said he's healthy and they're not worried about him being sick.
I was reading something about breastfeeding and for some reason felt the need to Google toung tie and he is showing all the symptoms but I don't have any. My nipples do get a bit sore occasionally but nothing a bit of lasinoh doesn't sort out.
When we first started having latching issues about three different midwifes and a health visitor checked in his mouth and couldn't see any toung tie but because of all the symptoms he has I am convinced he is toung tied! My hv is back out on Thursday so I will speak to her then but I'm not really sure where to go from here.

See if there's a specialist feeding/tongue tie person at your hospital - midwives and health visitors might not have had any training to spot it.

Lots of things there that could be related to tongue tie. Is there a local group with a BFC you can go to? Lots of HVs and MWs aren't very expert wrt tongue tie unfortunately.

There are also private LCs that could assess and/or treat if needed.

Where are you based and is private an option for you?

RedPony · 19/08/2014 16:47

There are a few bf support groups in my area which I have been thinking about going along too but they are run by hv's too. It's wierd because iv known somethings not right for a few days, took him to the doctors yesterday and explained everything bit the doctor just gave me a prescription for gaviscon incase he has indigestion but I have no idea why he would think that?? When I searched toung tie it's like everything has clicked and im pretty sure he has it. He also wants to feed constantly throughout the day which was another symptom I forgot. He is ok at night time as I express and DP does the night feed from a bottle

mawbroon I'm in Hampshire but I don't think I would be able to afford private for at least 6 months

There a couple of tongue tie support facebook groups where you can find out local providers.

My advice is make sure that you go to somebody first time round who is going to do a proper job.

Thanks i will have a look. I have just videoed him trying to feed with his clicking and coming on and off struggling to latch so I can show it to whoever needs to see.

In some areas you can get them sorted out on NHS quite quickly and easily. Others, not so good.

But some private options aren't that expensive and may be worth considering too - I know people who have paid anything from £90-250 ish but not all include good bf support/follow up so ask for local recommendations.

www.hampshirehospitals.nhs.uk/our-services/a-z-departments-and-specialities/c/child-health-services-(paediatrics)/a-z-of-specific-paediatric-conditions/t/tongue-tie.aspx is this your local place? Perhaps the HV will refer you?

www.uhs.nhs.uk/OurServices/Childhealth/Tonguetie/Tonguetie.aspx The Southampton service is quite well established as a provider - is that a possibility? (my geography is appalling, sorry)

RedPony · 19/08/2014 18:38

Thanks SecretSpy Southampton is quite local to me so I will look in to it :)
