Periods & breastfeeding - curious

Just wondering what the norm is for their return. Started my daughter on solids at Xmas when she was 4 months old. Now down to a breastfeed first and last thing. Still no sign of periods. Had a slight staining for about a day around end January but since then, nuthin.

Any comments welcome.

i've had a period every month since ds was born (five months ago)...and am still bf (one bottle feed a day but that only started at 3 1/2 months)...it's like the bf has had no effect on periods whatsoever...i think i am quite freakish in this respect tho...my sister has only just got one 3 months after stopping bfing

I wonder about this too. Switched to bottles about two months ago in preparation for going back to work and still no sign of anything returning. Ds does have the occasional b/f but not every day or anything - more like twice a week now.

There have been threads about this before - do a search. Basically it varies a lot and depends on the individual. Usually most people start their periods when their baby starts solids because they are feeding less but if your baby is less than 6 months then it may take a bit longer. The younger the baby then the less fertile you would be (nature's way of protecting you from getting pregnant). However it does vary. Some theories suggest that body weight can have a factor, ie if you are underweight your periods may take longer to return.

For me it took 13 months after ds and 18 months after dd. Even now 2 years later my period are still v irregular (still breastfeeding quite a bit).

Would take contraceptives though as your fertility returns before your first period ie as usual about 2 weeks before period you will ovulate.

Ah well - seems that everyone is different. I'm not that bothered - it's nice not having periods coz I always got a nightmare headache to accompany them but would like to start thinking about number 2 child.

Thanks Eulalia - I'm pretty new to this website. I didn't realise you could search on previous conversations. Found some useful and interesting threads. A great excuse for eating more chocolate
