Lactose intolerance, symptoms for 4 week old baby

Have been on here a few weeks ago about ds who is very colicky. He is now on colief drops, but is still very windy and colicky. My question is could he have a lactose intolerance. Feeds well, but after about an hour he gets very screamy almost in pain, and tends to vomit a bit, at first I thought it was just a reaction to burping but when vomiting he doesn't always burp before hand. This can go on for about an hour or more and it follows almost every feed. He always seems really distressed and he isn't tired as he sleeps well and is not over feeding. He drinks between 2 and 4 oz every 3-4 hours, depending on how much he had to drink in the previous bottle. He is on Aptimel first stage. Can anyone tell me what the symptoms are and should I be worried. I am a second time mum, ds1 had colic but not like this sfter every feed, surely he can get colic after every feed.

May be baby reflux, similar symptoms, also baby doesn't always take very much milk or may gag during feed.
Always best to see GP when it is such a tiny baby.
Has he put on weight?
Could try keeping him more upright after feed, eg in bouncer or sling.
This happened to a friend of mine with her 6 wk old, she tried colief and it made it even worse. Small amount of cool boiled water before feeds may help, or gripe water????
But check with someone qualified.

Thanks littlerach. Yes he has put weight on about 1 lb since he was born. He has cooled boiled water and is kept upright for at least half an hour-1 hour after feeds. The thing is he burps quite well but will still need to burp up to an hour after feeds. Dh wanted to try colief but I think he was more settled on Infacol, not sure really, the wind came up alot easier with Infacol. May give colief a few more days and if he seems to not have improved I may go back to Infacol.

Some people have suggested omneo comfort formula for babies who display this kind of colic etc
I do not know much about formula as I breastfed mine but have heard this from number of people as
Omneo is thick and smells gross but is said to be quite effective...
HTH

Also I think boiling water steeped with caraway seeds or fennel cooled and offered in small amounts can help alleviate wind type pains, I used this with my 1st who was very colicky even on breastmilk.
It is ana awful time, but if it is colic then you can know that this phase will pass soon hopefully...

Moosh - how old is your baby and when did the colicky behaviour start?

Don't take this the wrong way, but is relactation an option with you? If you are happy formula feeding then forget I asked : )

Lactose intolerance is actually very rare as something babies are born with, but some get temp. LI as a result of a bug. True LI would normally show up as failure to thrive as well as distress.

What does the HV say?

His colic began 2 weeks ago where as with ds1 it was at 7 weeks. I think it has got worse with the colief drops, the wind seems to be trapped for longer and he seems to be bringing up the milk alot more, where as with Infacol he only brought up little bits of phlegmy milk with a burp.
I agree that I don't think it is a lactose intolerance, even the colic doesn't worry too much as I look at my 4 year old now and know that it doesn't last long, it is just how long and painful the wind gets trapped. I now think that maybe Colief just isn't for him, he has been on it for 10 days and his pooh is still watery (with Colief it should only last for 2-3 days). He is due for his bottle at 2.00p.m. and I am dredding it I am seriously debating whether to get rid of the Colief or use the Infacol.

Still don't know how old your baby is.....what does the HV say? The watery poo sounds as if maybe the HV should take a look at him.

Sorry tiktok he is nearly 5 weeks old. The colief instructions say that their stools would be watery for 2-3 days but it has been a little longer, maybe I will speak to HV. Sometimes she annoys me, because she says things I already know or she quotes from things I have found out through books, nothing that seems really helpful to me, but I may take your advice.
