Does what mum eats affect baby's colic?

I thought there was some evidence that caffeine in the mother's diet might be related to colic symptoms?

Purplecrying.info is great on these problems. Evidence-based, I think.

Nqc, yes there are a few small studies that indicate excessive caffeine can have an effect. Iirc the mothers in the studies were drinking a lot of coffee.

But to add to that - I have never drunk tea or coffee, or coke etc. My only caffeine intake comes from the odd bit of chocolate and DS had shocking colic from 3-14 weeks, so it's not always explainable!

I think that if you have seen a major difference in your baby's mood / digestion / health due to changing your own diet when bfing, you come across a bit pushy about it. I know I do.
Some babies are sensitive to cows milk and other proteins coming through the milk. The vast majority are not.
But crying on its own is not indicative of allergy necessarily. When accompanied by rashes, digestive upsets, vomiting (not just possessing), refusal to feed etc.
then it may be worth an elimination diet.
There are very few people who know anything about breastfeeding and allergy. The books that are out there are outdated as allergy research is constantly finding out new information.
There is evidence, for example, that small amounts of allergens in mums diet may protect the baby from later allergies, desentising them. Perhaps bfing is a natural protector against allergies...?
So removing things from mums diet without good cause to suspect a link is possibly harmful.

Beans and pulses aren't going to get into your breastmilk Catsmama Confused

No, beans and pulses make us windy because of the fibre. It is only proteins that get into the milk. Crazy advice from a HV!
