dairy milk

This has prob been done before but could do with advice. I have four month dd2 and she is ebf. I often eat a big bar of dairy milk daily. Portion sizes are massive. I basically can't stop eating. Chomp, chomp chomp. I don't weigh myself but I'm definitely a lot chunkier now. I thought you were meant to lose weight when bfing?
I put on weight with dd1 and lost it all when I stopped bf at 10 months. This time though I find I'm putting on more weight.
Two questions. Is anyone else eating lots of chocs?
Has anyone successfully managed to wean themselves off and not feel exhausted and hungry?
Thanks

I practically lived on Green & Blacks (ooh get me with my faincy chocolate) in the early days of both babies, in fact I just ate a ridiculous amount of food in general. I found the ravenous hunger (not just for chocolate, for anything) definitely eased off once they were on solids, so you may find it calms down by itself. Lost a load of weight around 9 months both times without really doing anything.

Nine months, eh...? OK, here's hoping I stop before I reach critical mass. I eat these chocs super quick too and they melt onto dd's babygro.

I gained weight in early days of BF but i started to lose at least a lb a week from 6months. still seam to eat loads but weight fell off and stayed off. I now weigh less than I have in years. so I wouldnt worry at this stage. BF def helps weight loss but I think gain or no loss is normal as I think body holds on to fat initially to aid feeding but once weaning starts it starts to shed the excess weight.

yum yum for chocolate

Bf does help weight loss but the effect is likely to be totally negated by a large block of chocolate every day :)

Come on. Get real.

breastfeeding doesnt make you lose weight unless youre only eating a normal non breastfeeding diet. If youre eating constantly then youll gain. Its not magic

leedy · 14/07/2014 10:25

It's not as simple as that - I actually still lost weight while eating a lot more than my usual diet (think two breakfasts, two lunches, etc. - and then it fell off me once I stopped eating quite such a ludicrous amount), while some people put on weight while BF even if they're not eating tons of chocolate. I think it affects people in different ways - some people's bodies seem to hang on to the pregnancy weight while feeding, some people burn through it.

Branleuse · 14/07/2014 10:29

i didnt lose weight until i stopped breastfeeding because i was so bloody hungry and thirsty all the time

burgatroyd · 14/07/2014 10:50

I know the chocs are counter productive! I just wondered why I was craving this so much. I used to be a size 10 and now I'm like some sort of shuffle pig. Just wondered if others craved crazily and if this was normal.

For me it's about sleep. When we have a bad night I'll crabs sugary foods. Unfortunately this has lead to weight gain.

harverina · 14/07/2014 11:05

Bf makes me crave sugar. I have joined weight watchers to get my eating under control as otherwise I would have kept gaining weight. You won't lose weight if you eat too much calories/fat/sugar - you would need to be bf 24/7!!

fledermaus · 14/07/2014 15:22

I found breastfeeding made me put on loads of weight too. I think sleep deprivation makes you crave sugar.

NorahBone · 14/07/2014 20:34

I got no cravings when pregnant, but as soon as baby was out and feeding I got a real hankering for chocolate too. It may have been a lack of iron - I mostly ate dark chocolate in case, because of course this IS the best source of iron. Oh, and milkshake - probably my body trying to cheat the system.

Hopelass · 14/07/2014 20:45

OP I was exactly the same, easily chomping through a (huge) bar of dairy milk every day in about 5 mins flat whilst bf.

I continued when I'd stopped bf (DS was 6mo) and realised this was a bad idea because the weight slowly starting creeping on!!

DS is now 9 months old and I've lost 1st 6lbs in the last two months, I just went cold turkey and started walking loads, weirdly I don't get any choccie cravings like I thought I would. I have an 'emergency' bar of dairy milk in the cupboard but haven't needed to touch it........yet!

burgatroyd · 14/07/2014 21:01

OK...so its 9pm... And I've had no dairy milk! Yippee! That's because theres none in the cupboards. I have eaten loads of grapes though.

I have a ridiculous sweet tooth since giving birth and it hasn't subsided 8 months later. I also think lack of sleep has a lot to do with it. I am back to my pre preg weight with no real effort and if I watch what I eat for a couple of days (still lots to eat just not sugary crap) I drop a few lbs easily.

That said, having read this thread I know want to dive head first into a massive bar of chocolate at it's not even 8am yet!
