my dd is two weeks old and today and yesterday, has taken a long time to go to sleep in the day, getting overtired then eventually going to sleep mid afternoon. should i wake her to feed her in the day? my breasts seem to get very full if she doesnt feed regularly, ie about every four hours but i don't know if its better that she gets her sleep. at other times, she is constantly on the breast.at night she wakes about every 2 1/2 to 3 hrs but the day times are far more erratic.

sorry if this sounds very confused - I am finding this all very hard to get to grips with!

If she is gaining weight well, then I would say no, dont wake her. Unfortunately babies dont know day from night, and it takes a while for them to learn to do so. Its very common for babies to feed more in the evening/night at this stage.

Perhaps if you are getting sore or full in the day, you could express a little to ease the pressure? THis might help increase supply too, which is only ever a good thing.

yes agree with voiceofreason - it takes a little while for them to get into a routine that resembles that of the other humans in the family - i'd go with her needs at the moment, which isnt exactly conducive to a good night's sleep but i spose that's what we sign up for when we have a baby! and also agree about expressing if you can (you can freeze expressed milk if needs be)

olivo - I would tend to waken a young baby during the day to feed because they will make up any milk deficit with night feeds. Breastfeeding is a partnership - if your breasts are full then waken her to get some milk shifted. I personally would wke her 3-4 hourly during the day. In a couple of weeks you will find she is never off the breast as she approached a growth spurt
