baby rice in bottle - reflux

my ds often regurgitates some of her feed. he's putting on weight well and is healthy but the constant vomiting is getting v stressful. dr gave him gaviscon which makes some difference but worried as it can raise sodium levels so don't want to carry on with it. i've heard that adding baby rice to the bottle can help stop regurgitation. ds is 4.5 months old - is this ok to do and will it work? if so how much do i add?

No, I wouldn't do it. I don't have any reasons to back it up I am afraid, just instinct telling me not to. It sounds as bad as putting a rusk in a bottle. If he is healthy and putting on weight I wouldn't worry TBH

My son had mild refluc, it caused him no pain but he threw up every meal/feed. Starting baby rice and solids made no difference, except multi- coloured vomit. I started early too on advce of hv and really regret it now. It did stop at 10 months though.

Wouldn't touch baby rice with bargepole.
If doctor recommends Gaviscon I'd run with it - as far as I know the sodium thing is only an issue with premature babies or those with known renal issues.
Maybe talk to GP abut alternatives - Omneo Comfort? Enfamil?

Emskilou · 10/09/2006 19:45

Dont do it, at all, my dd now 21 months used to throw up what seemed like her entire feed (she was bf) but she was gaining weight perfectly well and her nappies were normal. I know it is stressful and you wish there was something you could do but as she is gaining weight it is not really a problem is it? BTW my dd never had gaviscon, I just kinda got used using about 1000 muslin squares every feed! Hope this helps

not a fan of the rice here either - joey can't have it - makes him terrible and unsettled.

Nemo1977 · 10/09/2006 19:50

I wouldnt do it. There is a specific formula that has baby rice in it but it is premeasured etc so ask gp about it. It is enfamil ar and dd has been on this from around 3mths old but would never consider adding my own to her bottles.

A friend's DD had bad reflux whihc turned out to be dairy intolerance.

ledodgyrobespierre · 10/09/2006 20:13

You can also get carobel milk thickener prescribed for reflux ask your gp.

LIZS · 10/09/2006 20:20

It is still done in Europe but not recommended in UK due to choking risk. You can get an alternative thickener called Thick n Easy which is starch based and works like cornflour - ask your gp, it is used in SCBU's for example. Agree weaning made no difference to dd's and we just put up with it until the worst of it resoveld itself at around a year.

WeaselMum · 10/09/2006 20:21

adding baby rice to milk to help with reflux is advised in some European countries I believe. But advice in the UK seems to be if it's not causing the baby to be distressed or interfering with weight gain, then just wait for them to grow out of it. My ds is the same & while it is a pain for me, he doesn't seem bothered by it and so I haven't given him any Gaviscon. You have my sympathies though!

WeaselMum · 10/09/2006 20:22

ooops - cross post with LIZS!

LIZS · 10/09/2006 20:24

In Europe it is one part of the weaning process (to make a thicker bottle before bed ) not specifically to do with reflux.

nearlythree · 10/09/2006 20:40

Baby rice gave my dd1 terrible wind - in the end for weaning I made my own.

Dr. Browns bottles are good for stopping possetting, my dd1 didn't bring up any milk after going on them. Don't know if they specifically help reflux but worth a try.

bungaloo · 10/09/2006 22:06

what about enfamil a r or omneo comfort - are either of these any good for reducing vomiting?
