Probably best to post the problem and see who can help? There are lots of us with some bf expertise here.

pupuce · 09/09/2006 15:33

I'm around... BF counsellor...

YellowFeathers · 09/09/2006 15:48

Well its not so much a BF problem. I posted the other day regarding a problem with ds so she was in the picture IYSWIM.
But if anyone else can help that would be great.

Basically ds is just over 2 weeks old. At the begining of this week we realised he had reflux so we have been given some prescription milk called Enfamil for him which is quite thick so therefore it stays down.
Yesterday we found blood in his poo so we took him down to the Dr's who said to take him to hospital if it carried on but she thought it was caused through straining and since the new milk hes having is quite thick his poo's will be more formed.
Her other suggestion was to give him water to help. Stupidly without thinking we gave him water and lo and behold he vomited.

I wanted to know if there was any other way of helping him as hes quite constipated through having this milk and after seeing him vomit after having the water I don't really know what else to do. I don't think changing the milk is an option but at the same time he can't carry on being constipated.

So any expertise or advice would really help!

I was also talking to tiktok about casually introducing BF again since I'm only 2 weeks post natal but once again, after seeing him vomit anything up other than this Enfamil I can't see that happening either.

Who has diagnosed his reflux ? How do you know he has reflux. Breastmilk is usually far better tolerated.

pupuce · 09/09/2006 16:00

I should add.. I am NOT a reflux expert but I don't see why the water made him vomit.... and was it vomit or a big big posset ?

pupuce · 09/09/2006 16:01

Sorry must leave computer now... hope Tiktok appears soon if she knows more than me on this !

YellowFeathers · 09/09/2006 16:05

Well I suspected it as I knew a bit about it but the HV was convinced it was reflux and she sent us to the GP to have it confirmed and to rule out any other problems.
He was bringing up full feeds when he was on the SMA where as he hasn't vomited at all since on the Enfamil, apart from yesterday when we gave him some water.

Yellow, I can't really help, I don't think, sorry. It's a bit outside what I know about. It's good you have the medical input.

Maybe the Enfamil is thicker and stays down better, as you said. Maybe he has a very sensitive valve at the top of his tummy and this means he throws up a lot (this is not anything to worry about in itself - plenty of babies have this and they grow out of it.).

The thing that sticks in my mind is that he lost 7 ounces in weight - is this now reversed? For a baby to pass blood due to constipation is something to be taken quite seriously, I would have thought - the milk cannot be suitable for him if it has this effect, I agree.

It would still be fine to try him on the breast - he certainly won't get constipated with breastmilk, and it doesn't matter if he chucks it up. Like I said on the other thread, all you do is put him to the breast as part of a cuddle - honestly, it would really be worthwhile thinking about going back to breastfeeding because i) that's what you really wanted to do ii) formula is making him have problems

You would need to keep him on formula until the point at which you re-built your milk supply....but even if he only has some breastmilk, it might help.

Good luck with this.

Hi Tiktok
thanks again

He had gained 2oz on Thursday and hopefully this is still increasing as he's not been vomiting since the change in milk but it was the weight gain that was concerning the HV.

He hasn't passed blood since yesterday either but is struggling to poo but its not suprising as its solid and quite big! (sorry if tmi!)

That's good about the weight - looks like he has stopped losing and has started gaining.

What's putting you off trying him at the breast?

melsy · 09/09/2006 19:14

Im so sorry yuor having this yellow , I know I had quite a few problems with dd1 and feeding and gaining , albeit with no reflux, hence not having much advice to offer hun. I just know how worrying and stressful it can be. Just wanted to let you know Im around to chat and offer suport in some way. My sisters little boy had the same problems with reflux and vomiting though I could ask her what she did may be?

YellowFeathers · 10/09/2006 21:33

Hi
Thanks for following this!

Tbh its not so much that I'm put off but I just can't think positivly about BF. With both dd and ds I couldn't get them to latch on and feed on my own. Not once. All it ever did was make them irritable because they wanted food or they could smell the milk but I could'nt actually do anything to help them. Even now after I have fed ds and he's quite content, if I put him skin to skin it makes him cross as he looks for the breast but can't do anything.

On my hospital notes it said from a number of the MW's that ds would latch but not suck. They had to latch him on as I couldn't do it and when he eventually got there, nothing happened.

The other thing that puts me off now is his reflux. Atm with bottle feeding I can see what he's taking (have been keeping a record for the last week). Also after seeing his reaction from taking the water the other day, I think breast milk will have the same effect.
But just to make matters worse now, he's started to vomit again anyway on the Enfamil.
His poo is back to normal, soft and yellow but is throwing his feeds back up.
I'll be suprised if he has gained weight at all but we'll find out tomorrow.

Feel at a dead end now tbh!

Yellow....I understand your feelings about all this. I think you are understandably concerned about the throwing up and the possible lack of weight gain. Hope you get reassuring news tomorrow at the weigh in. Let us know.
