Fluconazole for thrush

Hi,

I am a little confused about taking fluconazole for thrush. I was prescribed it by GP who was relcutant but I pushed her to prescribe it because I heard it was the best treatment if experiencing the breast pain associated with nipple thrush. After looking online I am now wondering if its ok to use whilst breastfeeding. Has anyone else taken it whilst breastfeeding? I have been in so much pain I had to stop breastfeeding two days ago which is very upsetting. I have also been prescribed drops for baby and cream for me. Latch has been checked by breastfeeding consultant.

I am also concerned about getting my milk flow back up after two days of not feeding as I have only been able to express little and often due to time. is there still hope to increase supply? Once pain is under control I want to BF again. I have a 5 week old. I would be grateful for any advice! Xx

If you definitely have thrush, then as far as I know it's fine to use when breastfeeding, I was prescribed it by my maternity hospital. A small amount of it does pass into your milk but it's less than the dosage you'd use to treat a baby. There are some concerns about using it with very young babies, but it's more a "you need to be sure that it's actually thrush rather than a latch issue before treating" than a "do not use".

Here's the Lactmed info on it:

(the main issue I had with it was that it made me kind of farty, had no notable effect on the baby at all)

I had a weeks course and it sorted my thrush out perfectly and I carried on feeding throughout.
