Breast feeding for first time ever, breast implants, what to expect

This is my 4th baby (after a 7 year gap) but will be the first that I have plans to attempt to breadt feed!

I'm planning on feeding myself for first couple of weeks then switching to formula, but who knows may go so well that I may even carry on but if it doesn't work then I'm not going to worry and stress myself out over it!

I'm worried about what to expect hearing lots about getting baby to latch on is not as simple as it looks also hearing that it's very painful.... Is all this right?

Also I have breast implants so can I expect this to make it harder for me? What can I expect to happen to them after I stop feeding ect?

Anyone got any advice for doneone totally new and clueless ?

I haven't found breast feeding very painful but it's true many women do. Some people say that if the latch is correct there is no pain but I don't think it's that simple. A poor latch will often cause sore nipples but some women seem to get sore nipples anyway and others (including me) get (to got) uncomfortable let down which has nothing to do with the latch.

My advice would be to get some nipple cream- lasinoh- use after every feed to start with, get midwife to see how you're doing before you leave the hospital and make the most of community resources if having problems. The main challenge I would anticipate (for you as an experienced Mum used to bottle feeding) is that it takes a few days for the milk to come in but you have to just keep letting baby suckle during that time, knowing they're not getting much and trusting (assuming baby healthy) that it'll work out.

In terms of breast feeding and implants it's usually possible.

I just looked on NHS choices and found this:

www.nhs.uk/Conditions/breast-implants/Pages/results.aspx

Having breast implants should not stop you breastfeeding, though some women will find they are not able to breast feed after breast implants. You may also produce slightly less breast milk than you would without implants. Your baby will not experience any side effects if you have implants and breastfeed.

Good luck
