Thrush treatment advice

Baby and I have had 3 weeks of thrush treatment. That was about 2 weeks ago. Think I might now have thrush on the other side. Doc says reluctant to prescribe more anti fungal for her since she's already been subjected to so much. Baby is 3 months old.

Any thoughts/advice on what to do?

What treatment has your baby been prescribed? If it's nystatin then it's worth arguing for Daktarin oral gel at the same time as Daktarin cream for you. Lots of people swear by canesten cream for nipple thrush as it contains similar stuff. You'd definitely have to wipe it off before a feed though.

You probably already know this, but make sure you're hot washing anything like towels and nappies, changing breast pads regularly, and no double dipping things like nipple cream. It's a bugger to get rid of, I know.

Oh, and my doctor has had no qualms in repeatedly prescribing anti fungal creams for my 9 week old. He said "at least you know you're trying something" !

Thanks misty. She's had both the Nystatin and the Daktarin gel. I've had the cream.

I think I should've named the thread something else because I'm actually wondering if the nipple pain could be something else since I'm hoping it's being caused by something that doesn't need medication.

I thought perhaps bad positioning but it's been 5 days and still sore, so the longer it's going on the more I'm suspecting thrush. Thanks for reminding me about the other stuff for getting rid of it.

What else could it be? And any other thoughts?

Hmm, does she have any white patches on her mouth/cheeks? My baby has always had a very thick white coating on her tongue, but I'm not convinced that's thrush for us. Do you have pain after feeding? Is it just the nipple, or more widespread? And was it pain free to start with?

It seems to have calmed down now. Hmm, let's hope it's passed, whatever it was.

I hope you're feeling all better now, but for the future, thrush is very over prescribed in this country. One of the key indicators for thrush is that you will have it on both sides from very early on, rarely just one side. So it may not have been thrush at all.

This site www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/pdfs/Differential_Diagnosis_of_Nipple_Pain_March_2009.pdf
is very useful to identify why you are sore

Hope that's useful

Thank you Rock. It's worrying that baby was on anti fungals for as long as she was, given what it says on that sheet. I hope she's OK!

If I remember correctly, there aren't any ill effects from the anti fungals, it's more a case of getting the pain sorted out, which requires the correct diagnosis in the first place!
Hope you're feeling better Smile

Just noticed this reply, thank you Rock. I'm now 4 months into BF and everything has finally settled down. I'm so relieved and am thoroughly enjoying it now. Smile
