tongue tie: laser vs snip

Dd is now 9 weeks and had her tie snipped at 5 weeks on the nhs. It bled quite a bit and she was very distressed by the procedure. It also opened up a few days later.

We've got an appt this week for reassessment as it looks like she still doesn't have good movement, but we are reluctant to put her through the snip again.

How is laser treatment different, and would we be better off getting it done that way privately this time? We just want what's best for her in the short and long term.

I would more be looking at who is wielding the tool tbh.

DS1 had both. First scissors under GA, but the snip was not done deeply enough to release his posterior tie. It released the anterior which stopped his reflux, but the posterior was missed. But this is really nothing to do with scissors v laser, more that the procedure was not carried out fully.

He was then revised with laser. It wound afterwards was much deeper which stands to reason because the posterior tie is further back.

The big difference for me was that he only needed a local anaesthetic for the laser revision. With laser, it is done a little at a time with assessment of tongue function done as they go. This is not possible when under GA.

This guy is an ENT who has used both.

But, you've maybe seen some of my other posts about DS1. He was 7yo when this was done, so a whole different ball game from revising a baby.

Oops, sorry . that should read THE wound Blush

Thank you for the reply :)

It doesn't look like many places do the laser option, so we'll see what the verdict is tomorrow...

Yes, your options are Dr Levinkind in North Finchley or John Roberts in Huddersfield.

John did ds1's and I took ds2 to Dr Levinkind earlier in the year for assesment. He didn't revise him in the end, but had he decided to, I would have been more than happy to have him do it.

So, I have personal experience of both of them, and in our case, they were both brilliant.

She was reassessed today and given the all clear :) we saw the head guy this time, Mr minocha, and he was brilliant. So relieved its all over.

misty9 Mr Minocha is amazing, he is so well respected and is the king of tt division. Your dd was in the best hands Smile

He was rather wonderful whatshall Grin
If only it'd been him who performed the actual division as his registrar was slightly lacking in bedside manner
The man himself was so reassuring and friendly.
